A brutal week for the stock market ended on a quiet note Friday, but worries about the global economy continued to pound copper, gold and other commodities.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 37.65 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 10,774.48.
The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index gained 6.87 points, or 0.6 percent, to end at 1,136.43.
The Nasdaq composite added 27.56, or 1.1 percent, to finish at 2,483.23.
For the week to date:
The Dow is down 737.61, or 6.4 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 79.58, or 6.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 139.08 or 5.3 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is down 806.03, or 7 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 121.21, or 9.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 169.64, or 6.4 percent.
