VoIP Phone System Requirements for small businesses | Article ...

VoIP Phone System Requirements for small businesses

VoIP, or voice over internet protocol, provides a rapidly growing alternate to traditional phone systems. VoIP calls are also referred to as internet telephony as it does not necessarily require telephone lines to communicate with the other person(s) and can be channeled across the intranet and internet.? However, the implementation of internet telephony is very different between the corporate and enterprise market and small business, home office and consumer applications.? We have set out the application of VoIP Phone Systems in the corporate arena elsewhere, but in this instance will focus on small business and consumer internet telephony.

Primarily, there are three basic requirements for a VoIP phone system to work for you: a fast speed internet like DSL, a computer or other terminal, and an adapter. Though VoIP Phone Systems can also work on slow speed internet connections but they hinder smooth communication and annoy the users. So, it is recommended even to pause all other downloads while using VoIP. Hence a fast speed internet is the first requirement.

]]>

Second requirement is related to the hardware. A computer is typically required to use VoIP services. That means there are some specific clients who prefer not to use a computer for this purpose, in such a case the VoIP service provider may provide them with the necessary alternative equipment to connect with VoIP; Vonage is such a company that does not require computers to provide VoIP services. However, the majority of the VoIP Phone Systems utilizes a computer as the terminal. The second hardware required to connect with VoIP network is a headphone to communicate with others. These headphones are available in the market or you can buy a VoIP head set for this purpose. These headsets are especially designed to VoIP functions and a VoIP services provider can provide you with one if you want to have one.

Software installment is the third and last requirement to connect with a VoIP network. Putting a glance at the top three VoIP service providers i.e. Google, Skype and Vonage; we come to know that only Skype requires its software installment to let VoIP users use its services. However, most of the VoIP service providers require their software installments for using their VoIP services. Most of these softwares are freely available for downloading.

VoIP Phone Systems are getting popularity for their affordable business communication solutions especially for small businesses and for this reason; they are called the future of business communication.

If you are paying lots of money on business communications, you can cut these bills down to a reasonable level by using VoIP services.? Of course this has implications ? call quality is typically very poor over the internet, and consequently this is seldom used in the corporate or enterprise markets.

Workers Compensation Is Really A Century Now; Is It Currently In ...

Workers Compensation Nsw

Workers compensation is an alternate means for employees to recover for work-associated accidents, other than suing their employers. States began passing workers? comp legal guidelines about a hundred years ago. Workers? Compensation pertains to afflictions or injuries sustained over the course of the everyday workday, during the course of carrying out work-related jobs. This can vary from crucial wounds or incapacity attributable to an accident or unsafe working environments, to progressively noticeable problems, like with carpal tunnel syndrome.

The wellbeing of employees and business

This system gives a level of protection to businesses and workers within the case of unsafe working situations or accidents; instead of counting on litigation for compensation, a state-sponsored insurance program helps to defray the cost of recovery. It is very important to know your workers compensation benefits to your specific state. You must understand the process especially if you are in a dangerous occupation.

Prior to 1911, staff who injured themselves on the job obtained compensation by a system known as negligible liability. The individual states have the right to regulate commerce inside their borders based on the U.S. Constitution?s tenth amendment. This meant that employers and their workers who have been injured went by way of the state?s authorized process to prove their case. It was torture.

Litigation quandary lead to reforms

Prior to the institution of staff compensation, even winning a case would not guarantee compensation to the workers because of particular loopholes that allowed businesses to keep away from liability. Now with workers compensation, the injured employee is given a incapacity rating after being examined by a health care provider at which level the employer?s insurance coverage company strikes into settle the injured employee?s claim.

Both workers and employers benefit from workers compensation laws for varying causes; employers now have a secure compensation system constructed on the insurance format as an alternative of the uncertainties of liability suits complicated by jury trials. Employees benefited in a variety of ways from the change in workplace accident compensation. The insurance coverage model allowed them to work with out fear and uncertainty of being destitute or having to face the onerous legal system at one time was biased in favor of the employer.

Getting honest treatment

Do not hesitate to seek the advice of with an lawyer in case your advantages have been delayed or denied; their often are no charges up front when consulting a workers compensation claim. Workers compensation has turn out to be one of the chief pillars of our social insurance coverage programs for staff within the United States. Many of those applications have been developed or adopted over a century in the past but took years to turn into established throughout the country.

Employees who?re unable to work due to accepted circumstances associated to an industrial injury or occupational disease might be qualified for partial wage substitute benefits. Workers? compensation will pay for the very first health-related appointment and an ambulance, if needed. Workers have the proper to select their doctor in most states. Company owners should document what brought on the damage, talk together with your worker, and confirm all of the information in the accident report they?ll receive from workers? compensation. Employers should offer coverage for his or her employees. In return, employers normally can?t be sued for damages whenever a work-related damage or illness happens. Owners of sole proprietorships and other businesses without employees aren?t don?t have to file workers? compensation insurance coverage. However, they might elect to purchase it from the state to guard their own medical fees if they are wounded on the job. There are online workers?compensation forms accessible for at the different state websites as well as statistical tutorials and rates. Go to the site available in your state.

Learn additional facts concerning workers compensation ontario.

Basically, workers? compensation is a sort of insurance policy which state law requires all employers on this state to purchase as a protection for his or her staff in case of a work-related damage or work-related accident. If an employer fails to purchase employee?s compensation insurance coverage, an injured employee will nonetheless be protected if he has a legitimate work comp case by a State agency known as The Uninsured Employers Fund. Although we take these advances with no consideration right now; there was sturdy opposition from many fronts through the early establishment of our compensation system. In case you are injured on the job, it is vitally important that you simply perceive the employees compensation process. Authorized decisions by the courts and the state?s statutes will control how your claim is handled. Totally different states have specific measures for controlling costs of advantages to injured workers.

Facebook engineer quits over iPad app

By Suzanne Choney

Like a lot of other iPad enthusiasts, Jeff Verkoeyen has been patiently waiting and waiting for Facebook to release its iPad app for a long time. A Facebook app for the tablet is a natural, especially when it comes to looking at photos and videos posted by friends, as well as tracking those seemingly endless streams of comments.

But Verkoeyen is not just an ordinary iPad user. He was the lead engineer at Facebook working on the Facebook iPad app?? which, as AllThingsD points out, Facebook "has never officially acknowledged." And he was apparently frustrated by the Facebook foot-dragging on the app, supposedly ready since May, quit and has now gone over to Google. (There's a lot of team-switching between? the two companies.)

Some of Verkoeyen's comments on his blog talked about his frustrations, and those comments have now been removed. TechCrunch, which previously carried info about the iPad app, shared one of Verkoeyen's "key" comments:

It is now nearly 5 months since the app was feature complete and I haven?t seen it released except for when the project was leaked on Techcrunch. Needless to say this was a frustrating experience for me. The experience of working on this app was a large contribution to the reasons why I left Facebook, though that doesn?t mean it wasn?t a difficult decision.

Verkoeyen contacted The Next Web to say that he wanted it to be known he clearly enjoyed working at Facebook (which, while likely true, is a wise thing for any employee leaving a company to say, in case he or she ever wants to come back). According to The Next Web:

... The frustrations surrounding the delayed release of the iPad app may have been a factor in his leaving the company, but they weren?t the only reasons that he had to move on.

... He says that while the app was ?feature complete? it was definitely not ready for public consumption. He says that there were definitely bugs and issues with the app that still needed working out. Although his post indicated that the development of the app slowed after his initial push in May, he says that it is still a ?continually evolving? app. Verkoeyen wanted to stress the fact that ?feature complete? and ?complete? are two very different concepts.

Perhaps Facebook has delayed the iPad app because of the recent changes it announced, with some of them being rolled out in the next several weeks. Among those are the addition of the story-telling Timeline. And it seems that Facebook has its own timeline for the iPad.

Southern California Grocery Strike Averted: Workers Approve Deal

LOS ANGELES ? Southern California grocery employees have voted to ratify a new contract with supermarket chains, bringing an end to months of conflict and averting a strike that could have crippled the industry and left shoppers scrambling.

United Food and Commercial Workers local spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said Saturday that after two days of voting, members agreed to the deal as their leaders had urged.

Union officials say the agreement ? reached with the region's three major grocery chains after a strike deadline had passed Monday ? addresses concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during the months of negotiations.

The union did not release the vote totals.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Shoppers in Southern California waited Saturday for word on whether major grocery stores would remain open, as a final wave of supermarket employees voted on a deal with grocers to stave off a strike.

It was the second day of voting on a deal that union leaders negotiated this week with the region's three largest grocery chains, Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons. They urged their rank-and-file to ratify the plan, which they said addressed concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during months of negotiations.

The supermarkets, meanwhile, said the agreement would allow them to remain competitive.

Polls were being kept open for two extra hours, until 8 p.m., so that members of United Food and Commercial Workers who want to vote would have the chance, union spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said. Union officials would be quick to tally votes, but it was not clear how long that would take, she said.

Details of the tentative agreement reached Monday were made available to members for the first time as they filed into their union locals' headquarters or other voting locations to cast their ballots on Friday and Saturday.

"I think they will be elated with the end result, and I believe they will vote in overwhelming numbers to ratify it," said Greg Conger, president of Local 324, one of the locals representing 62,000 grocery employees who have been working without a contract since March.

If ratified, the deal would end months of sometimes testy discussions between union officials and representatives of The Vons Cos.; Ralphs Grocery Co., a subsidiary of The Kroger Co.; and Albertsons, which is owned by Supervalu Inc.

Ralphs had indicated it would initially close all 250 of its stores if there had been a strike; Albertsons had said it could shutter up to 100 locations, while Vons had said its stores would remain open.

The prospect of shuttered stores and tense picket lines prompted fears of a repeat of the four-month strike eight years ago that cost the industry $2 billion and created a mess for shoppers.

This time around, with unemployment at 12.1 percent in California, workers evidently feared that they would find little public sympathy if they voluntarily walked off the job.

The market chains, meanwhile, were likely reluctant to invite shutdowns and picket lines that might alienate shoppers already spending less due to the economic downturn.

Union leaders and the markets announced in July that they had reached a tentative agreement on the employers' contributions to pension benefits, but remained far apart on payments to the union health care trust fund.

Union members voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize their leaders to call a strike. Those leaders said they were responding to what they characterized as the chains' delaying tactics when they issued the required 72-hour notice Thursday evening to cancel the contract extension under which they had been working since March.

But after the Sunday evening deadline came and went with neither a strike nor a deal, store employees returned to work. Union officials announced late Monday morning that the tentative deal had been reached.

Best Online Colleges: 10 Most Shocking Sports Tragedies of All Time

It's been the worst offseason in NHL history. Tom Cavanagh and Rick Rypien both committed suicide, Derek Boogaard died from a drug overdose, and now six current and former NHL players have perished after a plane carrying Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a Russian professional hockey team, crashed near the Russian city of Yaroslavl. Sports, though an escape, encapsulate the human condition, and those who follow them closely know that players aren't immune to the same randomness, unpredictability and personal issues we face in our lives. The following sports tragedies shook the nation and the world to their cores, and will remain forever etched in our memories.

  • U.S. figure skating team plane crash, 1961

Last February marked the 50th anniversary of the crash of Sabena Flight 548, which killed all 18 members of the U.S. figure skating team ? including numerous World Champions ? and its coaching staff. En route to Prague from New York City for the 1961 World Championship, it rapidly descended on approach to Brussels, bursting into flames in a field near the airport. As a result, the World Championship event was canceled, and the U.S. had to completely rebuild its figure skating team, a process that took nearly a decade.

  • Marshall football team plane crash, 1970

We Are Marshall depicts the extensive rebuilding and heeling processes that followed the crash of Southern Airways Flight 932. The Marshall Thundering Herd football team had just suffered a loss to the East Carolina Pirates and was returning home on a flight they hadn't originally chartered. Amid rain, fog and a rugged terrain, it struck the treetops on a hillside, caught fire and nosedived, killing 37 members of the team, eight members of the coaching staff and 25 boosters ? sadly, 70 children lost a parent in the disaster. The nation immediately went into mourning, and the university almost discontinued the program. Fortunately, the fans convinced President Donald Dedmon to support rebuilding, and the rest is history.

  • Munich Olympics massacre, 1972

The aptly named Palestinian terrorist organization Black September conducted a terrorist operation that forever cast a dark cloud on the 1972 Olympics. A hostage standoff ensued after eight men rounded up nine Israelis in an effort to secure the release of 234 prisoners held in Israel and Germany. After a resolution was delayed, the terrorists demanded to be flown to Cairo, prompting the Germans to organize Operation Sunshine. Knowing of the plan, the terrorists engaged in a shootout with the Germans, leading to the execution of all nine hostages by their captors. In the end, 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were dead, and just three of the terrorists were captured ? the other five were killed.

  • Roberto Clemente dies in plane crash, 1972

One of the most talented, accomplished and beloved players of his generation, Clemente's death was a devastating blow for the baseball community. The sting was made even greater by the fact that he died while on a relief flight to Managua, Nicaragua, which had just suffered a massive earthquake. Clemente wanted to ensure that the flight would reach its destination ? the previous three relief flights were intercepted by corrupt officials of the Somoza government. The flight he charted had a history of mechanical problems and was overloaded, causing it to plunge into the ocean near Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. He received numerous posthumous honors, perhaps the most notable of which was his early induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

  • Len Bias dies after cocaine overdose, 1986

A standout at Maryland, Bias had a promising future as the newest member of the Boston Celtics. But, just two days after the league's most successful franchise made him the No. 2 overall pick, he succumbed to cardiac arrhythmia caused by cocaine. The traumatic event occurred at his Maryland dorm room with teammates and friends, reaching a crisis point when an emergency medical team failed to restart his heart. Repeated attempts to revive him at the hospital also failed as friends and fans were gathering outside. The shock that overtook that crowd eventually overtook the nation. An entire generation remembers where they were when Bias died, another 1980's tragedy induced by drugs.

  • Zambia national soccer team plane crash, 1993

The entire Zambian soccer team ? 18 players and the coaching and support staff ? was aboard Zambian Air Force Buffalo DHC-5D when its left engine caught fire, causing the pilot to mistakenly switch off the right engine and the aircraft to fall into the water near Libreville, Gabon. Today, they're buried and remembered at Heroes' Acre outside of Independence Stadium in Lusaka. In a comeback story similarly experienced by the Marshall football program, the newly rebuilt team immediately rebounded, making an improbable run to the African Nations Cup final, where it narrowly lost to Nigeria.

  • Dale Earnhardt dies in crash at Daytona, 2001

Losing Dale Earnhardt was akin to losing someone such as Michael Jordan or Joe Montana. When NASCAR president Mike Helton announced his death following the 2001 Daytona 500, a large piece of NASCAR died as well. As the race was nearing completion, the left rear of Earnhardt's car was bumped by the right front of Sterling Marlin's car, forcing Earnhardt to correct, which caused him to crash into the wall at a speed of 155 to 160 mph. The incident resulted in the implantation of rules requiring head and neck restraints, which might have saved his life.

  • Oklahoma State basketball team plane crash, 2001

Following a game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Colorado Buffaloes, a Beechcraft Super King Air 200 carrying members of the media and two players ? Nate Fleming and Daniel Lawson ? crashed near Strasberg, Colorado. It was later determined that mechanical failure was the cause. Last January, the Oklahoma State community remembered the 10 men who lost their lives during halftime of the Texas game. Former coach Eddie Sutton and former player Desmond Mason discussed the impact the men had on the program and many lives with whom they came into contact.

  • Three football players lost at sea, 2009

Marquise Cooper and Corey Smith, both NFL players, and Will Bleakley and Nick Schuyler, both former football players at South Florida, merely wanted to spend a day fishing in the Gulf. But an unfortunate error caused the boat to capsize, leaving the four men in a fight for their lives. Two days later, Schuyler was found by the Coast Guard floating and clinging to the boat, with Cooper, Smith and Bleakley nowhere in sight. Private searchers continued to look for the three men, but called it off four days later. It was a remarkable story of survival for Schuyler, but, of course, it was also an extremely traumatic experience, as he witnessed his friends' final moments.

  • Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team plane crash, 2011

An outpouring of sympathy and condolences have come from the 10 countries from which the players and coaches hailed. Overall, 44 of the 45 people on board died, including Alexander Galimov, who died five days later. The Yak-Service Yakovlev Yak-42 was en route to Minsk, Belarus from Yaroslavl, Russia for the start of the 2011-12 Russian Major League season. The accident occurred when it struck a beacon tower mast after it failed to gain altitude, causing it to fall into the river bank of the Tunoshna River. Memorial services were subsequently held around Russia, where Rene Fasel, International Ice Hockey Federation president, described it as "the darkest day in the history of our sport."

Obama rolling back Bush-era education law

(AP) ? The Obama administration is offering states a way around provisions of the once-heralded No Child Left Behind law, contending many elements of the Bush-era education initiative have become barriers to learning and that too many schools, even those showing modest progress, risk being labeled as failing.

States will be allowed to ask the Education Department to be exempted from some of the law's requirements if they meet certain conditions. They include enacting standards to prepare students for college and careers and making teachers and principals more accountable.

President Barack Obama planned to discuss the changes Friday at the White House.

"To help states, districts and schools that are ready to move forward with education reform, our administration will provide flexibility from the law in exchange for a real commitment to undertake change," Obama said in a statement Thursday. "The purpose is not to give states and districts a reprieve from accountability, but rather to unleash energy to improve our schools at the local level."

The administration says it is acting because Congress has been slow to address the issues by rewriting the law.

But Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., who chairs the House Education Committee, has questioned whether the Education Department has the authority to offer the waivers. He's said that the president has allowed "an arbitrary timeline" to dictate when Congress should get the law rewritten and that the committee needs more time to develop its proposals, which it is doing.

Kline on Thursday called the administration's plan a political move and said he cannot support a process that sets a dangerous precedent by granting the education secretary "sweeping authority to handpick winners and losers."

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Thursday that the emphasis will be more on growth than on test scores.

"We can't have a law on the books that's slowing down progress, that's slowing down innovation," he said in Joplin, Mo., where the schools were left in ruins after a tornado last May.

The No Child Left Behind law passed in 2001 with widespread bipartisan support and much fanfare. It sought to hold schools more accountable for student performance and get better qualified teachers in classrooms. It also offers school choice and extra tutoring to students attending schools deemed failing.

Critics say the law created too much of an emphasis in classrooms on standardized tests, driving the stakes so high that it may have even fostered an environment where school officials in some districts opted to cheat. In particular, the requirement that all students be on grade level in math and reading by 2014 has been hugely unpopular.

Duncan has warned that 82 percent of schools next year could fail to reach proficiency requirements and thus be labeled "failures," although some experts questioned the figure.

He has said that it's "dishonest" for schools to be labeled as failing if they are showing real improvements and that the law is creating a "slow-motion educational train wreck."

Duncan also has said that many states under the law have lowered standards instead of making them more rigorous and that the law fails to differentiate between a high-performing school with one or two underperforming subgroups and a low-performing school where everyone is struggling.

The law has been due for a rewrite since 2007. Obama and Duncan had asked Congress to overhaul it by the start of this school year but a growing ideological divide in Congress in recent years has complicated efforts to do so.

The GOP-led House Education Committee has forwarded three bills that would overhaul aspects of the law but has yet to fully tackle some of the more contentious issues such as teacher effectiveness and accountability. Key Democrats on education issues, such as Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., have said they understand why the administration is moving forward with its plan.

Harkin said Thursday that he prefers a new education law covering all 50 states, not just those that choose to pursue a federal waiver. But he added that the administration's "patchwork approach" was the best temporary solution under the circumstances.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., a former U.S. education secretary, said waivers should be limited.

Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the top Republican on the Senate committee with oversight over education, said the administration's plan represents an unacceptable shift in power from states to the federal government.

Duncan has said the plan would not undermine efforts in Congress because the waivers could serve as a bridge until Congress acts.

    New images of falling satellite

Thierry Legault's video of the UARS climate satellite falling

An amateur astronomer has recorded images of the out-of-control US satellite as it tumbles back to Earth.

Theirry Legault, from Paris, captured the video as the satellite passed over northern France on 15 September.

The six-tonne, 20-year-old spacecraft has fallen out of orbit and is expected to crash somewhere on Earth on or around 24 September.

The US space agency says the risk to life from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is 1 in 3,200.

Mr Legault, an engineer, used a specially designed camera to record the tumbling satellite through his 14-inch telescope, posting the footage on his Astrophotography website.

UARS could land anywhere between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the equator - most of the populated world.

Nasa says that most of the satellite will break or burn up before reaching Earth.

But scientists have identified 26 separate pieces that could survive the fall through the atmosphere. This debris could rain across an area 400-500km (250-310 miles) wide.

Robust, spherical satellite components such as fuel tanks are often most likely to survive the fiery plunge to Earth, say space experts.

Nasa said scientists would only be able to make more accurate predictions about where the satellite might land two hours before it enters the Earth's atmosphere.

The 1 in 3,200 risk to public safety is higher than the 1 in 10,000 limit that Nasa aims for.

But agency officials stress that nobody has ever been hurt by objects re-entering from space.

Mark Matney, a scientist with Nasa's Orbital Debris Program Office, told Space.com that there was "always a concern".

But, he added: "Populated areas are a small fraction of the Earth's surface. Much of the Earth's surface has either no people or very few people. We believe that the risk is very modest."

UARS is one of the biggest American satellites to make an uncontrolled re-entry in more than 30 years. However, the Skylab space station, which also made an uncontrolled plunge through the atmosphere in 1979, was about 15 times heavier than the tumbling satellite.

Experts say that a recent expansion in the Earth's atmosphere due to heating by ultraviolet radiation has been causing UARS to fall to Earth faster than expected. The expansion increases the atmospheric drag on satellites in space, hastening re-entry.

The US satellite was deployed in 1991 from the space shuttle Discovery on a mission to study the make-up of Earth's atmosphere, particularly its protective ozone layer.

Nasa has warned members of the public not to touch any pieces of the spacecraft which may survive the re-entry, urging them to contact local law enforcement authorities.

Unprecedented role reversal: Ground beetle larvae lure amphibians and prey upon them

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2011) ? Usually it's the frog that catches the unsuspecting bug for a tasty snack, but in an unprecedented predator-prey role reversal, a certain group of ground beetle larvae are able to lure their amphibious would-be predators and consume them with almost 100% success.

In a report published in the online journal PLoS ONE, researchers begin to describe how these larvae are able to pull off this feat.

According to the researchers, larvae of the genus Epomis combine a sit-and-wait strategy with unique movements of their antennae and mouthparts to draw the attention of an amphibian (frogs and toads were used in the study). As the amphibian, thinking it has spotted potential prey, comes closer, the larva increases the intensity of these enticing motions. Then, when the amphibian attacks, the larva almost always manages to avoid the predator's tongue and uses its unique double-hooked mouthparts to attach itself to the amphibian's body and initiate feeding, which can include both sucking of bodily fluids and chewing body tissues, usually killing the much larger amphibian.

"Interestingly, adult beetles and larvae of species related to Epomis, are commonly preyed upon by amphibians," says the senior author Gil Wizen. "It seems that instead of serving as food items for amphibians, Epomis larvae have evolved to specifically take advantage of amphibians as a food source."

These findings extend the perspective of co-evolution in the arms race between predator and prey and suggest that counterattack defense behavior has evolved into predator-prey role reversal. However, the mechanism of the larva's swift counterattack against the speedy amphibian is still unknown.

Simon Cowell planning "X Factor" stage show (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Simon Cowell may not be satisfied just to finally bring "The X Factor" to the U.S. this week: He reportedly also plans a London stage adaptation of the show.

The Scottish newspaper the Daily Record reports that Cowell is teaming with British comedian Harry Hill and music producer Steve Brown to develop a comic musical based on the show, which premieres on Fox on Wednesday.

"Simon doesn't want a super-serious musical," a source told the paper. "He thinks if this is going to be something that works, it needs to be funny and have songs people might sing along to, but also laugh along with.

"It would be a perfect night out for 'X Factor' fans, and former stars of the show could even be involved in it."

In other words, the musical would be one way to ensure Cowell's 'X Factor' winners find paying gigs, and continue to bring in cash for him, after their time on the show ends.

Versions of "The X Factor" air in more than two dozen countries around the world, and has selected more than four dozen winners in various locales since Cowell launched the show in the UK in 2004.

China charms Europe, but Beijing has own agenda (AP)

LISBON, Portugal ? When a nervous horse unseated its cavalry officer at a red-carpet event during Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to Portugal last year, the leader of the world's second-largest economy broke with protocol and walked over to the bruised guardsman.

"I hope you get well soon," Hu told him through an interpreter.

The public display of compassion was in keeping with China's European charm offensive in recent years. It has waved its checkbook at a growing number of financially ailing European countries ? although the actual impact on Europe's debt-stricken countries has been limited so far, and aimed mainly at winning friends and business contracts.

Europe's frail economies are wobbling under the weight of their debts. Their urgent austerity measures are stunting growth and driving unemployment higher, and their citizens are clamoring for improvements. That has changed the complexion of European dealings with booming China.

Crisis-hit European countries are swooning over China's $3.2 trillion cash pile ? the world's biggest foreign exchange reserves ? even though many are angry about what they view as unfair Chinese practices.

"China is increasingly trying to diversify its foreign policy relationships ... trying to find the right ways to use its new-found influence, to gain from it," says Nicholas Consonery, an Asia analyst at Eurasia Group in Washington DC.

Join the dots, Beijing-watchers say, and China's strategy becomes clear: It wants to use its economic leverage to make friends who may be more forgiving in disputes over trade and human rights, and ensure doors are open for its goods and corporate investments in the European Union, its main export market.

Most immediately, many European countries are looking for a lifeline to extricate themselves from the continent's severe sovereign debt crisis, which threatens to collapse the continent's financial system.

In the latest example, Rome officials disclosed this week they held talks with China's sovereign wealth fund about buying debt-stressed Italy's bonds.

Before those talks, Beijing had vowed to buy the bonds of Greece and Portugal, which ended up needing international bailouts, and Spain and Hungary.

Though neither China nor EU countries disclose figures on Chinese bond purchases, analysts believe Beijing's repeated expressions of faith in the EU's finances are aimed principally at building goodwill and have not translated into large disbursements.

"Europeans have a tendency to pray for rain from China, but the rain is not necessarily coming," says Francois Godement, a Paris-based senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Experts reckon cautious Chinese leaders are hesitant about putting big money into jittery debt markets. Some leading Chinese economists have discouraged the investment as too risky, and analysts note Beijing has to pay attention to the needs of its own poor.

According to EU officials, China has invested in Europe's euro440 billion ($605 billion) bailout fund. But that fund carries a top AAA rating, meaning it is an extremely safe way for Beijing to help Europe without exposing itself much to the dangers of a default. The sums were never disclosed.

Rachel Shoemaker, an Asia expert at Executive Analysis in London, says the bond purchases ? however modest ? can help win approval for broader Chinese investments down the line, such as in trade and corporate and infrastructure investments.

"We assess that China's rhetoric is likely to exceed its actual support, with China likely to focus on commercial gains and thus to negotiate bilateral deals that essentially result in investment opportunities in return for bond purchases," Shoemaker said in a written reply to AP questions.

She cites Greece as an example. As China promised to acquire that country's bonds, state transport giant China Ocean Shipping Co. snared a $1 billion concession deal in 2009 for the country's largest container-terminal port near Athens. That gives COSCO's growing port management business a foothold in Europe and positions it to prosper as Chinese trade with the Balkans and Central Europe grows. China also pledged to help double the trade volume with Greece to nearly euro6 billion by 2015.

It's a similar story across Europe, with Chinese pledges of bond purchases coming simultaneously with announcements of major investments in the continent's corporations and infrastructures.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi last year spoke optimistically of doubling bilateral trade to $100 billion within five years. In one of the deals signed in their presence, Internet service provider Tiscali SpA and Zte, a Chinese maker of telecommunications equipment, made a deal for development of ultra-wideband in Italy.

One of the conditions of China's purchase of Spanish bonds in January 2011, analysts say, was the sale to Sinopec of around $7 billion worth of Brazilian oil assets held by Spanish energy company Repsol. That deal gave birth to one of Latin America's largest energy companies.

On his Portugal trip, the Chinese president signed cooperation agreements which sought to double trade between the two countries within five years. Chinese and Portuguese companies signed deals in areas covering energy production, information technology, telecommunications, tourism, banking, port infrastructure, and agriculture.

China's European push came after its expansion into Africa where it has invested billions, mostly in gaining access to raw materials.

"It's clear that China has been successful in pushing emerging market investments and it increasingly wants to diversify into the developed world," said Consonery of Eurasia Group.

Even so, Beijing knows that in the U.S. and Europe "the political hurdles are higher" than in Africa, Consonery said.

Europe, like the U.S., is fighting Beijing over trade barriers. Europe is vexed by aspects such as investment rules and copyright violations in China. The Chinese, meanwhile, are pressing the EU to grant China market economy status that would relax remaining trade obstacles.

Human rights issues are another sore point.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy took a soft line during a visit by Hu last year, when French companies won deals with China worth $22.8 billion.

Sarkozy said then that China has "a different culture," and Paris respected that. Two years previously, Sarkozy had threatened to boycott the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics over China's treatment of Tibet.

Beijing doesn't shrink from retaliation. After the Norwegian Nobel Committee gave the Peace Prize to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, the country's salmon exporters said their fish were being held up at ports by Chinese food safety inspectors.

Godement, of the European Council on Foreign Relations, says that in some debt-rattled southern EU countries human rights issues in China are being "de-emphasized."

China "hardly needs to push (on the issue) because there is so much economic anxiety ... in those Mediterranean countries about getting something from China," he said.

But opposition to China's advances are coming from other quarters.

In Italy, Chinese businesses have been buying up textile factories and producing the "made in Italy" label under Chinese conditions. That has undercut the prices of the finished goods and wages of Italian workers, causing tension.

When Greece announced its Piraeus privatization plan the Federation of Greek Port Employees went on strike, saying that "the government and the Chinese leadership should realize that we will not allow our ports ... to become Chinatowns."

Across Europe, storekeepers complain about losing business to Chinese rivals selling cheaper goods manufactured in a country which does not observe the same labor and environmental standards as in Europe.

China's foreign investment and export drive shows no sign of letting up.

"It's pretty clear that over the past couple of years Chinese foreign policy and international investment policies are becoming much more far-reaching in terms of their global footprint," said Eurasia Group's Consonery.

It is "one of those inevitable global trends that's going to persist for the next couple of decades really," he said.

The process of kitchen remodeling is often in large part instigated by a desire for new flooring. Perhaps no other design element plays such a strong role in the look and feel of the room. There are several types of kitchen flooring, each distinct and unique from others. Here is a ?cheat sheet? to highlight the best types of flooring, and the benefits of each.

    Vinyl Flooring

This is perhaps the least expensive and easiest to install, making it a favorite for those on a budget and DIY fans. It can stain easily, and can suffer water damage more readily than more expensive and durable flooring.

    Wood Flooring

While this is a popular choice because of the impressive look, it is often expensive, and can be slippery as well as requiring more maintenance than some other types.

    Laminate Flooring

This is the alternative for those who love the look of wood but not the price tag. It is easy to maintain and install yourself. However, when it gets worn down it will need to be replaced in its entirety, not just one piece or plank at a time.

These three options are just some of the most popular types of kitchen flooring. Choose these or many others, but research each option before you commit to a remodel with it.

Kitchen remodeling is easier when you shop at DirectBuy where you will find brand-name products ?appliances, flooring, countertops, kitchen cabinets and more ? all at savings of up to 50% off retail.

Reed, Don?t Listen To Wall Street.

Netflix stock chartNetflix took a beating on Wall Street last week. ?After revising subscriber estimates downward by 1 million subscribers, its stock went into free fall, closing the week at $155, down from a $300 peak in July. Netflix, the darling of Wall Street for the past three years, has lost half its value in a few short months. It must be a gulp moment right now for CEO Reed Hastings, who has always set Netflix on its own path and let investors figure things out for themselves. More than any other company, Netflix represents the transition of high-end video entertainment (movies and TV shows) to the Internet. A bet on Netflix, is a bet on streaming video. That transition is inevitable. It is going to happen for many reasons. Reed knows this. He saw it earlier than most. Sending people DVDs by mail was always just an interim business model until broadband, the studios, and customers caught up.

Months of changes precede end to military gay ban (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? Night-long celebrations will mark the final countdown to the historic end of the U.S. military's ban on openly gay troops, and even more partying will take place once it is lifted Tuesday. But in many ways change is already here.

Countless subtle acts over the past months have been reshaping the military's staunchly traditional society in preparation for the U.S. armed forces' biggest policy shift in decades. Supporters of repeal compare it to the racial de-segregation of troops more than 60 years ago.

For some gay service members, the fear of discovery and reprisals dissipated months ago when a federal court halted all investigations and discharge proceedings under "don't ask, don't tell," while military leaders prepared the armed services for its end.

Several have come out to their peers and commanders.

A few have since placed photographs of their same-sex partners on their desks and attended military barbecues and softball games with their significant others. In San Diego, about 200 active-duty personnel ? both gay and heterosexual ? made up the nation's first military contingency to participate in a Gay Pride march this summer, carrying banners identifying their branches of service. An Army soldier had tears, saying she was touched by the thousands cheering them on, after hiding her identity for so long.

"We're Gay. Get Over it," stated the cover page of the Marine Corps Times distributed to bases worldwide a week ahead of Tuesday's repeal.

The headline offended some but for many troops it echoed their sentiment that repeal is a non-issue for a military that operates by following orders and is busy at war. That sentiment is backed by Pentagon officials who say they have found no evidence the repeal so far has disrupted forces or harmed unit cohesion as predicted by opponents.

Air Force Capt. Diane Cox, whose gay son served in the Navy, said she got into heated debates with service members vowing not to take showers and share rooms with gays before Congress voted to repeal the law, but after the military held sensitivity trainings to explain the new rules "everybody just shut up."

Jokes are still told about gay people but the harsh remarks have stopped, she said.

"It's a new Air Force. I'm really surprised how everything settled down as much as it has," said the emergency room nurse at Travis Air Force base, near Fairfield in northern California. "Some of the best, most honorable people have had the military pin medals of honor on them for combat and then they've gotten kicked out over this. It's shameful. I'm glad it's done."

Many no doubt will continue to keep their personal lives private. But gay service members say their jobs already feel easier. They no longer use code words or change pronouns in their conversations to protect their careers. The Associated Press interviewed more than a dozen people who are currently in the military or left within recent months about the changes taking place.

Air Force Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, 42, said the differences may be subtle but the impact is profound. Fehrenbach came out on national TV in 2009 after the Air Force started discharge proceedings, which were later stalled by the repeal process. He reported for duty two days later and was congratulated by colleagues.

"I realized this was the first time I wouldn't have to lie. There was a great sense of relief, a great sense of pride that I had never felt before," said Fehrenbach, who retires from service Oct. 1. "They're going to feel that on Tuesday ? every service member who has not come out yet. Even if they choose to keep their private life private, they're going to have the feeling that a burden has been lifted."

The United States on Tuesday will join 29 others nations, including Israel, Canada, Germany and Sweden, that allow gay individuals to serve openly in their militaries.

More than 14,000 people were discharged under the 1993 Clinton-era law. President Barack Obama campaigned on the law's repeal, but efforts stalled in Congress until a federal judge in California last year declared it unconstitutional and briefly blocked its enforcement. Lawmakers in December voted to lift the ban and a federal appeals court overturned the ruling, allowing for a lengthy repeal process monitored by Pentagon officials ? which they said helped ensure the change did not disrupt the military. Obama certified in July that repeal would not harm the military's ability to fight.

Pentagon officials have spent the past 60 days reviewing policies and benefits to iron out details, including how the repeal will affect housing, military transfers and other health and social benefits.

More than 2 million troops have undergone courses on how to deal with possible scenarios for personnel who may, as examples, witness same-sex partners kissing after a deployed ship comes home or see a gay service member hold hands with someone at the mall.

Some adjustments will take time, Fehrenbach said, like seeing troops with their same-sex partners at military balls ? which is expected to happen in coming months.

"It will be great if some do it," he said. "But they should just realize they'll get some looks. And that's OK."

Opponents of the policy change say they worry service members who oppose homosexuality are the ones who will get looks or even get punished by receiving less important assignments or postings, discouraging them from expressing their views.

"I am concerned that some soldiers or military personnel who hold orthodox views about sexuality will no longer feel comfortable attending balls or military functions. Will those persons not be seen as team players or will they be marginalized in some way because they no longer feel comfortable doing the things they were comfortable doing?" said retired Army Col. Ron Crews of Grace Churches International, which has endorsed 20 active-duty chaplains. All chaplains need to be sponsored by a church organization to be in the military.

Crews said the rules are unclear: Chaplains wonder whether they can deny gay service members wanting to sing in the chapel choir or teach in Sunday school as they are allowed to do in their civilian churches. Will they have to invite same-sex partners on retreats as part of the military's strong bonds program that helps couples dealing with the hardship of deployments, or will they face punishment if they refuse?

Crews says if his chaplains counseled same-sex couples on such retreats they would be in violation of their denominational understanding of marriage, and could have their endorsement revoked and be discharged.

"There are many ramifications of this policy change that are yet to be seen," he said. "What we've told our chaplains is that they've got to be very clear with their commanders about what they can and cannot do in this environment."

Gay marriage is one of the thornier issues.

An initial move by the Navy earlier this year to train chaplains about same-sex civil unions in states where they are legal was shelved after more than five dozen lawmakers objected. The Pentagon is reviewing the issue.

Military officials also say the disparity in benefits between gay married couples and heterosexual couples also must be addressed.

Gays and lesbians will share the same barracks and bathroom facilities as other troops. But those legally married will be treated differently from heterosexual married couples when it comes to assigned housing, relocation packages and some other benefits.

Lance Cpl. Anthony Hernandez, who is stationed at Twentynine Palms in the desert northeast of San Diego, said Marines are still divided over the issue, with opponents worried openly gay Marines will dilute the Corps' tough image.

"The way I think of it, if you're willing to put your life on the line for your country, then what's the problem if you're gay" the 20-year-old Marine said.

Hernandez's older brother, Danny, was discharged under "don't ask, don't tell" in 2010.

"I cried about it," Hernandez said. "I didn't know why I was crying. It wasn't because I found out he was gay. It was more about the discharge, about what he would do with his life now. I knew he always wanted to be a Marine like me."

Danny Hernandez plans to apply to re-enlist after celebrating Tuesday.
