Game 7 highest-rated baseball game since 2004

The momentum from the historic Game 6 of the World Series benefitted Fox as Game 7 became the most-watched baseball game since 2004.

The Series-clinching game in which the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers, 6-2, averaged 25.4 million viewers.

It earned the most viewers since the Boston Red Sox made even more history by winning their first World Series title in 86 years against the Cardinals in 2004.

St. Louis' dramatic comeback against Texas in Game 6 likely set the stage for the large audience, by generating a huge buzz. The Cardinals twice came back from two runs down in the ninth and 10th innings in Game 6 -- a first for the World Series -- before winning it in the 11th inning.

Seventy-four years after the zeppelin, another gas giant arises.Hybrid Air Vehicles' new aircraft is not technically a blimp. Nor is it a zeppelin, a craft that saw its end with the Hindenburg explosion in 1937 (and a rebirth, of sorts, in the proto-heavy-metal band's name).

Hunter Suggestion - Multiple Pets

It's really bloody hilarious that everything hunters have always wanted is in the warlock talent tree for MoP, and hunters get some healing on disengage to "compensate."

Hunters also have lots of things warlocks have always asked for. hunters have 37 different types of functionally different pets while warlocks only have 5. and let us not enter the aesthetic field where the hunter choices are far too numerous for me to count (and the warlock ones are still 5 lol).

hunters are better at soloing old content than warlocks (they even have a healing pet), their pets have their own talent trees, they get new pets every patch and if you kill one of those, it's mass QQ everywhere.

the point is: each class has their own wishlist and blizz is filling it from time to time. but you can't expect them to give you everything you believe your class needs or else it'll be too perfect and get dull fast. perfection will bring failure because people will get bored. as long as people still have a wishlist, they can hope their features get added and continue dreaming and playing.

Ala. immigration battle recalls civil rights past (AP)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ? The epicenter of the fight over the nation's patchwork of immigration laws is not Arizona, which shares a border with Mexico and became a common site for boycotts. Nor was it any of the four states that were next to pass their own crackdowns.

No, the case that's likely to be the first sorted out by the U.S. Supreme Court comes from this Deep South state, where the nation's strictest immigration law has resurrected ugly images from Alabama's days as the nation's battleground for civil rights a half-century ago.

And Alabama's jump to the forefront says as much about the country's evolving demographics as it does the nation's collective memory of the state's sometimes violent path to desegregation.

With the failure of Congress in recent years to pass comprehensive federal immigration legislation, Arizona, Georgia, Utah, South Carolina and Indiana have passed their own. But supporters and opponents alike agree none contained provisions as strict as those passed in Alabama, among them one that required schools to check students' immigration status. That provision, which has been temporarily blocked, would allow the Supreme Court to reconsider a decision that said a K-12 education must be provided to illegal immigrants.

Its stature as the strictest in the nation, along with the inevitable comparisons of today's Hispanics with African-Americans of the 1950s and `60s, makes it a near certainty the law will be a test case for the high court.

"It really offers the Supreme Court a broad canvas to reshape what being an immigrant in the United States means," said Foster Maer, an attorney with LatinoJustice in New York, which is challenging the law.

Alabama was well-suited to be the nation's civil rights battleground because of its harsh segregation laws, large black population, and the presence of a charismatic young minister named Martin Luther King Jr., who led a boycott of segregated buses in 1955.

Opponents say the new law's schools provision conjures images of Gov. George Wallace's stand in the schoolhouse door to block integration.

"Today we have a different stand in the schoolhouse door. We have efforts to intimidate children who have a constitutional right to go to school," said Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Although no solid numbers exist, schools have reported fewer Hispanic students attending school, with some saying as much as 10 percent of their Hispanic students have withdrawn since the law took effect a month ago.

Illegal immigrants interviewed by The Associated Press have said their children were bullied and told to go back to Mexico, while others have described their intense fears of arrest and deportation.

The lawyer leading the state's defense, Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange, faults President Barack Obama's Justice Department for stirring the civil rights comparisons by falsely predicting the law would lead to the kind of widespread discrimination and profiling that marked Alabama's past.

"The idea they seem to have is there's a Bull Connor on every corner here in Alabama, which is so widely out of touch with our state," he said, referring to the public safety commissioner who unleashed police dogs and fire hoses on civil rights marchers in Birmingham in the 1960s.

At first glance, Alabama seems ill-suited to be the nation's immigration battleground. It's not a border state and is home to fewer illegal immigrants than several other Southern states.

"Why are we getting all the publicity? I think it has to do with Alabama's past and the perception that people have of Alabama over the years that don't live in our state and really don't recognize the amount of progress we've made in Alabama over the last 50 to 60 years," said Republican Gov. Robert Bentley, who advocated the law and signed it into effect.

Alabama's law, pushed through by a new Republican super-majority in the Legislature, is being challenged in federal court by the Justice Department, about 30 civil rights organizations and some prominent church leaders. Judges have blocked some provisions, but sections still stand that allow police to check a person's immigration status during traffic stops and make it a felony for illegal immigrants to conduct basic state business, like getting a driver's license.

State Rep. Alvin Holmes, the senior black member of the Legislature, said Republicans can't undo the voting rights gains of Democrat-leaning blacks, so they are going after brown-skinned people in hopes they won't gain a voting foothold. "They feel if these Hispanics come in and get registered to vote, they will team up with black voters to take over Alabama politics," he said.

Proponents say the law had nothing to with race. They say it was the result of frustration with the federal government's inaction and an effort to open up jobs for the nearly 10 percent of legal state residents out of work.

"There are people who try to make racism a cottage industry and profit off it, but I would put the harmony in Alabama up against any place in the country," said Republican Sen. Scott Beason, one of the law's sponsors.

Beason, the powerful chairman of the state Senate's Rules Committee, has prompted some of the comparisons with the civil rights era by telling one group that the Legislature needed to "empty the clip" on the immigration issue. And in tapes played during the federal trial of several lawmakers and lobbyists accused of buying and selling votes on gambling legislation, he referred to customers of a dog track in a predominantly black county as "aborigines."

Opponents of the law have fueled the comparisons by holding rallies at historic civil rights sites and drawing support from civil rights organizations.

No one in the Alabama Legislature was talking about immigration laws a decade ago because the Hispanic population was so small. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates the number of illegal immigrants in Alabama has grown from 25,000 in 2000 to 120,000 in 2010 ? a nearly fivefold increase ? though it's only a fraction of the 11 million or so estimated in the country.

That rapid rise drew complaints from residents who blamed Hispanics for knocking them out of jobs by working for cheaper wages and no benefits.

"They were coming in here like thieves in the night and taking our jobs and tax revenue," said Republican Rep. Micky Hammon, who also sponsored the new law.

To be sure, construction businesses and farms say Hispanic workers they have relied upon have fled the state. So far, they haven't been able to find legal residents willing to take on what is usually backbreaking work.

The governor said lawmakers in other states are eyeing Alabama's law as a blueprint for their own, but some fear that notoriety could come at a steep price: The state's image as an international automotive hub.

In 1993, a few months after state officials quit flying the Confederate battle flag on the Capitol dome, Mercedes selected Alabama for an assembly plant. Then came Honda, Toyota and Hyundai, and many auto suppliers.

The CEO of the state pension system, David Bronner, helped recruit those plants and now fears Alabama has hurt its ability to recruit.

"You are giving the image, whether it's valid or not, that you don't like foreigners, period," he said, adding that state leaders frequently seize on bad publicity to knock other states out of competition for new jobs.

That bad publicity has made its way to Hillsboro, Wis., where information technology businessman Charles Manser and 11 of his buddies have canceled a 10-day golfing vacation to Alabama.

Manser said one friend was born in Puerto Rico and another is a British citizen. They were concerned about being hassled over their legal status.

"Whether it's legitimate or not, that's the message seen by people who might come to Alabama," he said.

Drug hallucinations look real in the brain

The visions induced by an Amazonian brew used by shamans may be as real as anything the eyes actually see, according to brain scans of frequent users of the drug.

Draulio de Araujo of the Brain Institute at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Natal, Brazil, and colleagues recruited 10 frequent users of the brew ? called ayahuasca. They asked the volunteers to look at images of people or animals while their brains were scanned using functional MRI, then asked the volunteers to close their eyes and imagine they were still viewing the image. Unsurprisingly, the researchers found that neural activity in the primary visual cortex dropped off when volunteers imagined seeing the image rather than actually viewing it.

But when the team then gave the volunteers a dose of ayahuasca and repeated the experiment, they found that the level of activity in the primary visual cortex was virtually indistinguishable when the volunteers were really viewing an image and when they were imagining it. This means visions seen have a real, neurological basis, says de Araujo ? they are not made up or imagined.

Michael Brammer, head of the brain imaging unit at King's College London, says the study's statistics appear to indicate something relatively robust. However, he says it's difficult to pin down whether the eyes-closed responses on the drug are quantitatively the same as normal, eyes-open neural activity. "Functional MRI is not a one-to-one mapping of cerebral activity. If it were, things would be easier," he says.

Robin Carhart-Harris of Imperial College London has done similar fMRI work using the "magic mushroom" hallucinogen psilocybin. He says the results also have practical implications, such as for the application of psychedelics in psychotherapy.

Ayahuasca may also find its way into the psychiatrist's drug kit. The pharmacology of its ingredients tallies with the way some conventional drugs work; because of this, researchers are interested in ayahuasca's potential for treating addiction, depression or conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. One of the brew's two ingredients is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi, which contains chemicals that act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors ? a major class of antidepressant drugs. The other ingredient is the shrub Psychotria viridis: it contains the powerful hallucinogen DMT (dimethyltryptamine), which acts on the mood-altering serotonergic system, the target of antidepressants such as Prozac.

Report: Industry decides food ingredient safety (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Thousands of ingredients that go into food have been classified as safe by private industry alone, without any government oversight, according to a new report published Wednesday.

Since the early 1960's, private companies and industry trade associations have determined at least 3,000 ingredients are safe, with no federal scrutiny, the study found. The ingredients include everything from artificially synthesized chemicals used in chewing gum to grape seed extract used in cheese and instant coffee.

The peer-reviewed report published in the Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety journal draws on research funded by the Pew Health Group, the health and consumer safety arm of the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association says the industry only classifies ingredients as safe after a battery of rigorous biological tests but agrees that more transparency in the vetting process would help build consumer confidence.

"The system is less transparent than it should be so we're looking to open that dialogue," said Leon Bruner, the association's chief science officer, who agreed the study's estimates were reasonable. "We are completely comfortable with increasingly the transparency or the visibility of ingredients that go through the process."

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act makes food manufacturers responsible for ensuring food ingredients are safe. Companies can classify an ingredient as "generally recognized as safe" for use in a specific product but aren't required to tell the Food and Drug Administration about what they find. Some do, through a voluntary notification program that gives the Food and Drug Administration a chance to review the findings.

Panel: Boys should get HPV vaccine given to girls (AP)

ATLANTA ? A vaccine against cervical cancer hasn't been all that popular for girls. It may be even a harder sell for boys now that it's been recommended for them too.

A government advisory panel on Tuesday decided that the vaccine should also be given to boys, in part to help prevent the cancer-causing virus through sex.

Public health officials have tried since 2006 to get parents to have their daughters vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes most of the cervical cancer in women.

They have had limited success, hitting a number of hurdles. Some parents distrust the safety of vaccines, especially newer products. Others don't want to think about their daughters having sex one day, or worry that the vaccine essentially promotes promiscuous behavior.

Tuesday's vote by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' was the first to strongly recommend routine vaccination for boys since the vaccine was first approved for them two years ago. Officials acknowledged the low rate in girls encouraged them to take a new, hard look.

Experts say a key benefit of routinely vaccinating boys could be preventing the spread of the virus to others through sex ? making up somewhat for the disappointing vaccination rate in girls. But the recommendation is being framed as an important new measure against cancer in males.

"Today is another milestone in the nation's battle against cancer," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention administrator who oversees the agency's immunization programs.

Federal health officials usually adopt the panel's recommendations and ask doctors and patients to follow them.

The vaccine has been advised for girls since 2006. Just 49 percent of adolescent girls have gotten at least the first of the three HPV shots. Only a third had gotten all three doses by last year.

"Pretty terrible," Schuchat said.

Schuchat attributed the low rates for girls to confusion or misunderstanding by parents that they can wait until their daughter becomes sexually active. It works best if the shots are given before a girl or boy begins having sex.

Some conservatives argue the vaccine could promote promiscuous behavior. It has come up in the GOP presidential campaign. Texas Gov. Rick Perry came under attack for a 2007 executive order requiring adolescent girls to get the vaccine (with an opt-out clause). When conservative lawmakers rebelled, he backed down.

An estimated 75 to 80 percent of men and women are infected with HPV during their life, but most don't develop symptoms or get sick, according to the CDC. Some infections lead to genital warts, cervical cancer and other cancers, including of the head and neck.

The HPV vaccine is approved for use in males and females ages 9 to 26; it is usually given to 11- and 12-year olds when they get other vaccines. The committee also recommended that males 13 to 21 years get vaccinated.

Tuesday's vote follows recent studies that show the vaccine prevents anal cancer in males, and may work against a type of throat cancer. A study that focused on gay men found it to be 75 percent effective against anal cancer.

While anal cancer has been increasing, it's still fairly rare. Only about 7,000 U.S. cases in men each year are tied to the strains targeted in the HPV vaccine. In contrast, about 15,000 vaccine-preventable cervical cancers in women occur annually.

Preventing a cancer that's primarily associated with gay men may not be much of a selling point, said Dr. Ranit Mishori, a family practice doctor in Washington, D.C. and an assistant professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Some parents may say "`Why are you vaccinating my son against anal cancer? He's not gay! He's not ever going to be gay!' I can see that will come up," said Mishori, who supports the panel's recommendation.

Schuchat indicated the CDC is ready for that kind of argument: "There's no data suggesting that offering a vaccine against HPV will change people's subsequent sexual behavior," she said.

So far, the threat of genital warts hasn't been persuasive: Some data suggest that less than 1.5 percent of adolescent males have gotten the vaccine over the past two years.

Meanwhile, some feel it's unlikely that most parents will agree to get their sons vaccinated primarily to protect girls. A survey of 600 pediatricians last year found that nearly 70 percent of doctors thought families would deem vaccination of their boys as unnecessary.

Experts at the committee meeting noted an earlier analysis that showed vaccinating boys would not be cost-effective if the female vaccination were high.

"If you do reach high coverage of females, will you stop vaccinating males?" asked Dr. David Salisbury, director immunization for the United Kingdom's Department of Health.

There are two vaccines against HPV, but Tuesday's vote applies only to Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, which costs $130 a dose. The other vaccine wasn't tested for males.

The committee's recommendation ? and the greater insurance coverage of the vaccine that is expected to follow ? will make it easier for more boys to get the shots, said Dr. Mark Feinberg, chief public health and science officer for Merck Vaccines.

Merck officials bristled at the idea that males would see the vaccine as mainly meant for gay men, noting that HPV-caused anal cancers can occur in heterosexual men.

Maura Robbins of Chicago said she's likely to have her 12-year-old son, Cole, vaccinated against HPV ? but probably not until he's a little older. "I would just like to see some long-term testing and long-term results," she said.

China urges EU to reach debt deal without delay (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China urged the European Union on Monday to deal with its debt crisis as soon as possible and prevent contagion from spreading, as the country's number four-ranked leader arrived for a visit of the continent, including Greece.

"We hope that the EU countries concerned will reach a comprehensive settlement plan as soon as possible and adopt effective measures to ease the euro debt crisis and prevent the crisis from spreading further," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters.

"China is confident that the EU has the ability and wisdom to overcome these straits. We have always provided what help we can to the countries concerned via bilateral and multilateral channels."

The official Xinhua news agency, in a commentary, urged Europe to get its act together.

"It's time for European leaders to refrain from calculating and paltering and show their wisdom, determination and drive to step out of the crisis-cast shadows," it said. "Europe has missed some of the opportunities to defuse the crisis, and small steps over the past two years have proved impotent."

At a summit on Sunday, European Union leaders neared agreement on bank recapitalization and discussed how to leverage up the 440 billion euro ($600 billion) European Financial Stability Facility crisis fund to stave off bond market contagion.

Sharp differences remain, however, over the size of losses private holders of Greek government bonds will have to accept and how to scale up the EFSF without EU governments contributing more capital themselves. Final decisions were deferred until a second summit on Wednesday.

The mostly likely method for leveraging the euro zone's bailout fund involves using it to provide bond insurance while combining its firepower with a special purpose vehicle (SPV) drawing in cash from China or Brazil, EU officials said.

Jiang declined to comment on that idea, saying her ministry was not the appropriate agency to answer such a question.

"In principle, we support the efforts of the EU countries concerned in addressing this crisis," she said.

Quite why China would choose to fund an SPV scheme that guaranteed to take losses in the event of a debt restructuring or default in the euro zone left some investment bank economists puzzled.

China already has an estimated 600 billion euro exposure to euro zone debt, courtesy of the 25 percent or so of its $3.2 trillion of foreign exchange reserves that analysts believe to be invested in euro-denominated assets.

STRUCTURE KEY TO FRESH FUNDING

"As for whether China will continue to buy European debt really depends on what types of debt are on offer -- for countries that have been hit hard by the debt crisis, the risk is probably too high," said He Fan, an economist at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a top government think-tank.

"But we could do it under a multi-lateral framework; for example, we lend money to the IMF and let the IMF buy European debt. Bonds linked to the EFSF are safe but probably we haven't bought much because their yields are too low."

However a substantial investment in a new SPV, even via an entity backed by the International Monetary Fund, appears to some analysts an expensive way of insuring that exposure.

Tens of billions of euros would be required to give the EFSF the 1 trillion euro-plus firepower that economists say is needed at a minimum to safeguard the euro zone financial system.

Meanwhile there were precious few details emerging from Europe as to how any SPV might be structured.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Europe on Friday to stop its debt crisis from spreading across the bloc, warning that fundamental reforms were needed to staunch the euro zone's troubles, in comments made after the two sides postponed an annual summit.

Jia Qinglin, who heads a largely ceremonial advisory body to China's parliament and is the Communist Party's fourth-ranked leader, will repeat offers of support for and confidence in Europe during a visit this week that also includes heavily indebted Greece, Xinhua said.

Jia will "reiterate China's confidence in Europe's ability to cure the current financial malaise as well as Beijing's willingness to assist the debt-ridden continent in grappling with the challenge," Xinhua said in a separate commentary.

Jia will also go to the Netherlands and Germany.

China's relative lack of options on where to store its vast reserve of foreign exchange wealth give it strong reasons to press Europe to surmount divisions, contain the debt crisis and thereby protect Beijing's stake in its biggest trade partner.

The euro bloc's crisis has already taken a toll on Chinese exports, which grew at their slowest pace in seven months in September. Exports were a net drag on China's economic growth in the first nine months of this year.

China's top leaders have voiced regular support for European efforts to solve the debt crisis, though many analysts now say there are better ways for China to support Europe and its own economy than simply buying up high risk debt from euro zone governments struggling to stay solvent.

"Premier Wen Jiabao has always said China will help Europe tide over the current difficulties," said Lin Tun, an economist at China International Capital Corp, China's top investment bank.

"I don't think buying bonds is the only and best option for China at all. There are plenty of physical assets and other high-quality assets in Europe."

Drake, Florence And The Machine Collabo Not Yet A Reality

'Whenever I see Drake, we always just end up kind of hanging out, which is equally fun,' Florence Welch tells MTV News.

Since meeting at the 2010 VMAs, Drake has been vocal about his admiration for Florence and the Machine and has even talked of possible collaborations. With both acts set to release albums within weeks of each other, many have wondered if Drake would appear on Florence and the Machine's upcoming Ceremonials or if the band would appear on Drizzy's Take Care.

Sadly, the answer is no.

"We haven't actually done any recording together," Florence Welch told MTV News. "Whenever I see Drake, we always just end up kind of hanging out, which is equally fun, but no, we haven't done anything together yet."

After meeting at the VMAs, Welch joined Drake onstage in London this past January and filled in for Alicia Keys performing Drizzy's "Fireworks."

"I think we're both big fans of each other's work," Welch said. "If we would have the time it is something I would definitely like to do, but we're both really busy."

Drake's Canadian cohort the Weeknd, however, took it upon himself to remix Flo and the Machine's "Shake It Out" in September. Welch is a fan, and she even has hopes of shooting a most creative video for the remix.

"Oh my God, I love it," she gushed. "I love it so much. I really want to make a homemade video of it. I don't know, like, rainbow exorcism. I hear that song, and it makes me think of puking rainbows."

Would you like Florence and Drake to get in the studio together? Let us know in the comments!

3-D simulations of nova explosions

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? A new study has shown how mixing of elements occurs during a nova explosion, thus solving an enigma that has puzzled stellar astrophysicists for over half a century.

Scientists at the Universitat Polit?cnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) have for the first time simulated critical phenomena that occur during nova explosions. Their work has made it possible to precisely characterise the physical properties and chemical composition of the material ejected in novae, and this has yielded the solution to an enigma that has puzzled experts for over 50 years: the origin of the irregular, inhomogeneous distribution of nova ejecta.

The paper, published recently in Nature, has facilitated analysis of the role these thermonuclear explosions play in the chemical enrichment of the galaxy.

As a result of the complex nuclear phenomena that take place inside stars, the universe has evolved from a chemically poor state -- dominated exclusively by the presence of hydrogen, helium, and traces of lithium -- to one containing nearly a hundred stable elements. Without the variety of elements now present in the cosmos, the formation of structures like planets and stars and the genesis of live forms -- including the calcium in our bones, the iron in our blood, and the uranium we use in our nuclear power plants -- would have been impossible. Most of chemical elements originated in supernovae and novae, titanic stellar explosions.

Novae are cataclysmic stellar phenomena that take place in binary systems consisting of a compact stellar object (a white dwarf star the size of a planet but with a mass of up to 1.4 times that of the Sun) and a low-mass star. The stars must be close enough for the intense gravitational field of the white dwarf to tear material away from the outer layers of its companion.

Novae, which are relatively frequent in our galaxy (some 30 to 35 nova-like explosions occur each year), are the third most energetic stellar explosions in the universe, after supernovae and gamma-ray bursts.

Novae and supernovae have been observed by humans for over two thousand years. The way these stars suddenly become much brighter -- a change sometimes observable to the naked eye -- has given rise to a great variety of conjectures about their origin.

With the advent of new, more precise observational techniques (such as photometry and spectroscopy) experts have been able to precisely characterise some physical properties of the material ejected during nova explosions, such as its chemical composition. Scientists know that the material transferred by the companion star is often of solar composition (i.e., close to 98% hydrogen and helium by mass). But other elements, in the range between carbon (C) and calcium (Ca) on the periodic table, can account for 30% to 50% of the material ejected during a nova explosion.

The origin of this peculiar pattern of chemical abundances and their irregular distribution in nova ejecta is an enigma in the field of stellar astrophysics that has eluded explanation for almost half a century. According to the most likely hypothesis, when the material transferred by the companion star piles up on the white dwarf, mixing episodes occur at the interface between the outer layers of the white dwarf and the envelope of transferred material. But the characterisation of this mixing process has provoked vivid discussions. One of the proposed mechanisms could not be rigorously simulated until sufficiently powerful computational tools were available.

Simulations with the MareNostrum supercomputer

Now, a team of researchers led by Jordi Casanova, a PhD student, Jordi Jos?, a Professor of Physics at UPC's Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, and Enrique Garc?a-Berro, Professor of Physics at the Department of Applied Physics, has shown that the accumulation of material on the white dwarf via this mechanism is unstable. This instability results in mixing episodes involving material at the interface between the outer layers of the white dwarf (rich in elements like carbon and oxygen, or oxygen and neon) and the envelope of transferred material. The researchers were also able to establish the extent of heavy-element enhancement caused by this phenomenon, which up to now had been deduced from observational data.

This phenomenon was demonstrated based on 3-D simulations of the mixing process, which the team performed for the first time for nova explosions. The simulations were possible thanks to the use of sophisticated tools like the MareNostrum computer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre -- Centro Nacional de Supercomputaci?n (BSC-CNS), after 150,000 hours of calculation.

The possibility of recreating 3-D physical phenomena like convection under the conditions that prevail during nova explosions also led to a solution to the second part of the puzzle. Scientists already knew how energy transport by convection works in stars but could offer only a formal account of this phenomenon. Now, thanks to the study conducted by the UPC researchers, it has been numerically shown that, under the conditions that exist during a nova explosion, the matter (plasma) is in a turbulent state; its movement is unstructured, almost chaotic.

The intermittent nature of this turbulence results in irregularities in the chemical distribution of material in ejected envelopes. Up until now, this phenomenon had never been numerically tested in nova explosions (in fact it had not even been proposed as a hypothesis to explain the origin of the observed chemical heterogeneity). The heterogeneity was attributed until now to a lack of precision in the measuring process. The UPC study shows that this phenomenon is real, and that it is caused by the intermittent nature of the turbulent phenomena that occur in stellar plasma as it undergoes a thermonuclear explosion.

Researchers Jordi Casanova and Jordi Jos? are attached to the Barcelona College of Industrial Engineering (EUETIB) and the Space Studies Institute of Catalonia; Enrique Garc?a-Berro is attached to the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC) and the Space Studies Institute of Catalonia.

Steven Shore of the University of Pisa (Italy) and Alan Calder of Stony Brook University (USA) also participated in the project, which has received support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Government of Catalonia (through the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants), the European Union's ERDF programme, and the European Science Foundation.

Airlines try to hike fares: Will they stick?

Holiday travelers may want to lock in airfares now, because they're going up.

At least two U.S. airlines are raising prices for the first time since late summer and others may follow.

Delta Air Lines Inc. raised one-way fares by $4 to $10 across most of their U.S. routes late Tuesday, according to Rick Seaney of Farecompare.com. Soon after, United Continental Holdings Inc. matched the increases. It's the first widespread fare increase attempt since early August and the 17th try this year.

The increase may not stick. Airlines often roll back fare increases if enough competitors don't match them. A recent attempt to raise prices in smaller cities met resistance, Seaney said.

Of the 16 previous attempts to increase prices this year, half of them failed. The eight that succeeded have brought average fares up by $58 to $70, said Citi analyst Will Randow.

The current fare hikes come as airlines begin reporting third-quarter financial results. While higher ticket prices annoy travelers, they send a positive signal to airline investors because it's a sign of strong demand.

Still, higher fares weren't enough to prevent another loss at American Airlines parent AMR Corp., which blamed it on high fuel costs. On Wednesday AMR reported it lost $162 million in the third quarter ? its fourth straight losing quarter. Southwest Airlines Co. is set to report results Thursday morning.

Some travelers may avoid higher fares by taking advantage of fare sales. Many airlines recently matched a winter fare sale from Southwest that runs through Thursday. It excludes most peak travel days around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

World's most entrancing islands

An Orthodox bell tower overlooks the port town of Fyra, Santorini. On this Greek island, everything appears brighter, from the whitewashed houses to the lapis lazuli sea to the sunsets that light up the island's caldera.

After a long flight and a steep hike, you finally reach your own slice of paradise: Kauai?s private white-sand Pali Ke Kua Beach, where the only other living creature is a sea turtle laying her eggs.

Slideshow: World's best islands

Islands naturally ignite wanderlust, and the Hawaiian island of Kauai (ranked No. 8) is a longtime favorite among Travel + Leisure readers. Maybe it?s the frisson that comes from leaving the mainland ? and your everyday cares ? behind as you cross that watery barrier, a physical reminder that you are, indeed, cut off from the rest of the world. Whether your journey is a short ferry ride or oceans away, the extra effort it takes to get to that island seems to heighten the experience exponentially.

But which islands are most worthy of the trip? We asked readers to cast their votes in Travel+Leisure?s 16th annual World?s Best survey, and the results reveal one universal truth: a predilection for islands with astonishing natural beauty. Bali continues to hold on to its ranking in the top five, but there are also surprises. Two of last year?s European islands fell off the list, while a desire for the far-flung raised the profile of destinations in the South Pacific and Asia.

One such newcomer, Boracay in the Philippines, may be one of the last undiscovered Asian beach getaways. The sandy-shored speck is accessible via a frequent hour-long flight from Manila to Caticlan, followed by a 10-minute ferry ride. Now is the moment to go, as the openings of five-star properties like the Shangri-La Boracay Resort & Spa and Discovery Shores will only spur tourism.

Even if islands get you dreaming of remote places, you don?t need to abandon North America to find an unspoiled shoreline. On Nova Scotia?s Cape Breton Island, rugged beaches and forested headlands set the scene for a rich local culture that blends Scottish, Acadian, Irish, African and native Mi?kmaq influences. Take them all in at a ceilidh (kay-lee) dance gathering.

North America, Europe, Asia ? every continent except for Antarctica is accounted for among the World?s Best Islands.

Dolphins: Not 1-15 bad

Darrelle Revis

By BARRY WILNER

updated 12:44 a.m. ET Oct. 18, 2011

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Four years removed from the worst season in franchise history, the Miami Dolphins are trying to ignore the whispers that another 1-15 record is in the making.

The Dolphins fell to 0-5 Monday night, victimized by Darrelle Revis' 100-yard interception return and two long, timely drives by the Jets' offense. New York ended its three-game slide with a 24-6 victory that kept Miami at the bottom of the league.

"This is embarrassing," said receiver Brandon Marshall, who was the target on Revis' first of two picks. "We have way too many players in our locker room to be sitting at 0-5. We owe it to the city of Miami, to ownership ... to turn it (around)."

They couldn't do so against their AFC East rival, whom the Dolphins had beaten three straight times in New Jersey. The few times Miami threatened, it bogged down deep in Jets territory, winding up with field goals of 23 and 21 yards by Dan Carpenter.

Coach Tony Sparano, whose seat gets hotter by the week, said the Dolphins emphasized not allowing game-changing plays during practices in their bye week. Then they got on the Meadowlands field and not only couldn't find the end zone, but yielded those exact plays.

Again.

"All week long, for two weeks, all we were talking about was developing a next-play mentality," Sparano said. "Big plays have hurt us, they've just been different (kinds of) big plays.

"A good player brings it back, he does what a good player does," Sparano added of Revis' first-quarter TD, the longest interception runback in the NFL this season. "We've got to learn to get out of our own way and that's important."

Safety Yeremiah Bell, who was with the Dolphins for that 1-15 debacle, doesn't want to hear any comparisons.

"We know it's all on us," he said. "'07 was 1-15 and this is a way better team than the '07 team. We have a lot more players.

"It's very frustrating when you're 0-5 and not making plays. We can't think about 0-5, just have to put it away."

Marshall didn't live up to his promise to get ejected sometime in the second quarter. He also said he might start a fight with Jets linebacker Bart Scott or cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

Nothing came close to that.

Mark Sanchez threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and ran for another score as the Jets ? who called this a "must-win" game ? capped a tough week with a win.

With the losses mounting and the season already on the brink of spinning out of control for the Jets (3-3), they traded wide receiver Derrick Mason to Houston and then had to deal with some infighting as Holmes called out the offensive line for not giving Sanchez enough time to throw deep. Right guard Brandon Moore fired back, saying those comments could have a "fragmenting effect" and were not what a captain, which Holmes is, should do.

Ryan, who insisted his team's Super Bowl hopes would not be undone by locker room disharmony, even sent Holmes and Moore out as the captains for the pregame coin toss.

Turns out, the Dolphins showed up at just the right time as the Jets got their season back on track.

Sanchez, who has also taken lots of criticism, finished 14 of 25 for 201 yards and the touchdown pass to Holmes, and Shonn Greene ran for 74 yards on 21 carries.

Moore, starting for the injured Chad Henne who's out for the season after shoulder surgery, was 16 of 34 for 204 yards and two interceptions. Marshall had six catches for 109 yards, but was kept out of the end zone. Reggie Bush, who left in the third quarter with his right arm hanging at his side ? it was announced as a neck injury ? had 71 yards rushing and two catches for 7 yards.

The night appeared to be taking an awful turn for the Jets when they lost the ensuing kickoff after the field goal when it bounced off blocker Garrett McIntyre ? standing in front of returner Joe McKnight ? and was recovered by Austin Spitler.

But Moore threw at Marshall in the end zone, Revis stepped in front of the pass and returned it untouched 100 yards to make it 7-3. The return tied for the longest in franchise history, first set by Aaron Glenn in 1996, also against Miami.

Carpenter's 21-yard field goal early in the second quarter made it 7-6, capping a nine-play, 77-yard drive that was helped by Marshall's 46-yard catch along the left sideline ? in which he stepped out of bounds at the Jets 35. On third down at the Jets 3, Moore went to Marshall in the end zone but his toss was slightly behind him and the ball went off the receiver's hands.

The Jets opened with four straight three-and-outs for the second consecutive game before getting things going late in the first half. On third-and-9 from the Jets 20, Jeremy Kerley caught a 14-yard pass for New York's initial first down of the game, with 6:17 left in the half.

The Jets got three more first downs, including Holmes' 20-yard reception that got the ball to the 11. Two plays later, LaDainian Tomlinson gained 9 yards on a shovel pass. Sanchez, lined up in the shotgun, took two steps and then zipped forward and dived into the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown to give New York a 14-6 lead with 1:14 left in the opening half.

Nick Folk kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 17-6 in the third quarter, capping a 13-play, 79-yard drive that took nearly half the period.

Holmes' 38-yard catch and run early in the fourth quarter sealed it for the Jets after Sanchez bought some time with his feet and found the receiver, who easily outran linebacker Cameron Wake and made a few nice moves on his way into the end zone to put New York up 24-6.

Senator drops opposition to pipeline safety bill (AP)

WASHINGTON ? In an about face, Sen. Rand Paul, one of Congress' most ardent foes of government regulation, has dropped his "hold" on a bill to toughen federal safety regulation of oil and gas pipelines, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky Republican said Monday.

Paul agreed to drop his opposition to the measure after winning agreement from its sponsors to add an amendment to the bill to close a gap in regulations that allows older pipelines to escape safety testing requirements, Moira Bagley, Paul's spokeswoman, said. Paul has been the lone senator blocking consideration of the bill.

"I have found a way to address the problems more thoroughly through these regulations, while limiting their scope and unnecessary red tape," Paul said in a statement. "My proposal will be unanimously passed and accepted by both sides, further proving that my actions have enriched this legislation."

Paul, a tea party ally and anti-tax activist, was elected to the Senate last year in part on the strength of his opposition to new federal regulations.

Oil and gas pipeline industry officials and congressional aides told The Associated Press last month that Paul and his staff had explained privately that he was blocking efforts to pass the bill using unanimous consent procedures that avoid a lengthy debate because he is opposed in principle to its expansion of federal regulation.

Paul and his staff had told them he had no specific objections to related to pipeline safety, but he felt that at a minimum an expansion of federal regulations should receive a thorough debate by the entire Senate, industry officials and congressional aides said.

But as a practical matter, important but lesser measures like pipeline safety regulations that can't be approved quickly wind up languishing indefinitely because Senate leaders must conserve valuable debate time for other must-pass bills.

After his opposition to the measure was publicized, Paul issued a statement saying he wasn't satisfied with the safety provisions of the bill. His latest statement also said he was dissatisfied that the bill was written before the National Transportation Safety Board had published its report on a natural gas pipeline rupture near San Francisco last year that killed eight people, injured dozens more and damaged or destroyed more than 100 homes.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved the bill in May without opposition. It would authorize more federal safety inspectors, and pipeline companies would have to confirm that their records on how much pressure their pipelines can tolerate are accurate.

Under the bill, federal regulators could order that automatic shutoff valves be installed on new pipelines so leaks can be halted sooner. And it directs regulators to determine whether mandatory inspections of aging pipelines in densely populated areas should be expanded to include lines in rural areas. It would be paid for by industry fees.

The bill is supported by the industry's major trade associations ? the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, the American Gas Association and the Association of Oil Pipelines ? as well as the Pipeline Safety Trust, a safety advocacy group.

Dark matter mystery deepens

Monday, October 17, 2011

Like all galaxies, our Milky Way is home to a strange substance called dark matter. Dark matter is invisible, betraying its presence only through its gravitational pull. Without dark matter holding them together, our galaxy's speedy stars would fly off in all directions. The nature of dark matter is a mystery -- a mystery that a new study has only deepened.

"After completing this study, we know less about dark matter than we did before," said lead author Matt Walker, a Hubble Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

The standard cosmological model describes a universe dominated by dark energy and dark matter. Most astronomers assume that dark matter consists of "cold" (i.e. slow-moving) exotic particles that clump together gravitationally. Over time these dark matter clumps grow and attract normal matter, forming the galaxies we see today.

Cosmologists use powerful computers to simulate this process. Their simulations show that dark matter should be densely packed in the centers of galaxies. Instead, new measurements of two dwarf galaxies show that they contain a smooth distribution of dark matter. This suggests that the standard cosmological model may be wrong.

"Our measurements contradict a basic prediction about the structure of cold dark matter in dwarf galaxies. Unless or until theorists can modify that prediction, cold dark matter is inconsistent with our observational data," Walker stated.

Dwarf galaxies are composed of up to 99 percent dark matter and only one percent normal matter like stars. This disparity makes dwarf galaxies ideal targets for astronomers seeking to understand dark matter.

Walker and his co-author Jorge Pe?arrubia (University of Cambridge, UK) analyzed the dark matter distribution in two Milky Way neighbors: the Fornax and Sculptor dwarf galaxies. These galaxies hold one million to 10 million stars, compared to about 400 billion in our galaxy. The team measured the locations, speeds and basic chemical compositions of 1500 to 2500 stars.

"Stars in a dwarf galaxy swarm like bees in a beehive instead of moving in nice, circular orbits like a spiral galaxy," explained Pe?arrubia. "That makes it much more challenging to determine the distribution of dark matter."

Their data showed that in both cases, the dark matter is distributed uniformly over a relatively large region, several hundred light-years across. This contradicts the prediction that the density of dark matter should increase sharply toward the centers of these galaxies.

"If a dwarf galaxy were a peach, the standard cosmological model says we should find a dark matter 'pit' at the center. Instead, the first two dwarf galaxies we studied are like pitless peaches," said Pe?arrubia.

Some have suggested that interactions between normal and dark matter could spread out the dark matter, but current simulations don't indicate that this happens in dwarf galaxies. The new measurements imply that either normal matter affects dark matter more than expected, or dark matter isn't "cold." The team hopes to determine which is true by studying more dwarf galaxies, particularly galaxies with an even higher percentage of dark matter.

Study finds clue to birth defects in babies of mothers with diabetes

Monday, October 17, 2011

In a paper published today in Diabetologia, a team at Joslin Diabetes Center, headed by Mary R. Loeken, PhD, has identified the enzyme AMP kinase (AMPK) as key to the molecular mechanism that significantly increases the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and some heart defects among babies born to women with diabetes.

Even if women with diabetes -- either type 1 or type 2 -- work vigilantly to control their blood sugar levels around the time of conception, the risk of a defect is still twice that of the general population. This finding could lead to strategies to interfere with the mechanism and reduce the chances of such birth defects occurring.

Previous studies published by Loeken's lab showed that maternal hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) causes oxidative stress in the embryo, and inhibits expression of the Pax3 gene. Pax3 is essential to the formation of the neural tube, which in the embryo is the precursor to the brain and spinal cord. Oxidative stress results when oxidized molecules - called free radicals - are created faster than they can be eliminated.

However, Loeken said, it was not known how the cells that express Pax3 could sense the oxidative stress and why oxidative stress, which occurs throughout the embryo, only damages selective structures such as the neural tube.

In the paper published today, Loeken's team identifies the key to the process as AMP kinase, which is activated by oxidative stress and was found to signal the cell nucleus to block the expression of Pax3.

"The stimulation of a metabolism-sensing enzyme that can regulate specific genes explains how oxidative stress, which is generated throughout the embryo during maternal hyperglycemia, causes malformation of specific embryo structures," Loeken said.

"We now know that we must do whatever we can to prevent AMPK from being stimulated," said Loeken, who is a research investigator in Joslin's Section on Islet Cell and Regenerative Biology.

Trying to keep the mother's blood glucose levels under control is currently the only way to do that, she noted. "That's the best we can do right now," she said. But armed with the findings of this study, she noted, other researchers may be able to come up with drugs or other strategies to inhibit AMPK activity,

Dr. Loeken added, however, that formulating a strategy could be tricky because it is not known if interfering with AMPK activity -- while a good thing in preventing neural tube birth defects -- might also have negative effects on the embryo.

In their study Loeken and her group, including Yichao Wu, Marta Viana, and Shoba Thirumangalathu, used mice and cell lines to test their hypothesis that AMPK might be stimulated in the embryo and that stimulation of AMPK was responsible for blocking Pax3 expression and causing neural tube defects in response to high glucose.

"We found in this study that AMPK is stimulated in embryo by both high glucose and oxidative stress," Loeken said.

The study used interventions including a drug that activates AMPK and another that blocks it. The paper showed that a drug that increased AMPK activity mimics the effects of oxidative stress to inhibit expression of Pax3, thus inducing neural tube defects.
