Trick or Treat: Video game classics for Halloween | SciTech | GMA ...

All Hallow?s Eve: the day when kids and adults alike can dress up as monsters, celebrities, or just about any character from popculture fandom. As an annual event, this occasion is a rare moment to witness creepy or spectacular things.?

?

It?s also an opportunity to scare yourself witless, and there are a couple of good games out there to consider playing for your fright fest inclinations. There are some really creepy titles out there that get the job done of sending jolts down your spine, but here?s a worthy list of horror-themed game franchises that I?ve encountered through the years that will hopefully give you more tricks and treats to consider for Halloween.?

?

Resident Evil

?

?

The progenitor of ??Survival Horror? as we know it and known as BioHazard in Japan, Capcom?s ?Resident Evil? franchise began under the direction of Shinji Mikami, releasing the game on an unsuspecting gaming populace during the early years of the original Sony Playstation. Its isolated mansion setting ?is very Alone in the Dark inspired, coupled with the tension and horror of facing zombies and other monstrosities with limited ammo forced gamers to reconsider their options in fighting threats head-on. A B-Movie plot loomed over solving numerous puzzles to progress through the plot, but it?s George A. Romero inspired setup made the game a runaway success, inspiring numerous sequels and spin-offs that carry on to this day. A film franchise by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich is loosely based on the games, with the latest one ?Resident Evil: Retribution? seeing release this past September.

?

?

Silent Hill

?

?

Following the success and release of Resident Evil, other video game companies tried to break into the ?Survival Horror? genre, with Konami being successful in their attempt. Released in 1999 for the Playstation, ?Silent Hill? proved to be more than just a Resident Evil clone, and proved without a shadow of a doubt that it was more terrifying than Capcom?s own monster franchise. Set in a fictional midwestern town that gives the game its title, themes of psychological horror and cult worship were adapted into the plot, circling around a man trying to find his daughter in a seemingly haunted ghost town. Multiple endings and a score composed by one Akira Yamaoka certified Silent Hill as another horrific classic, and that in turn warranted more sequels, which were subsequently released for later console generations. Recent installments did not fair well as of late, but Konami?s horror franchise has spawned two film adaptations, with the latest one being released this year ? ?Silent Hill: Revelation 3D?.

?

?

Castlevania

?

?

Anyone who?s grown up with a NES by their side knows Castlevania, and Konami?s vampire hunting franchise has seen the light of day on several occasions thanks to different innovations over the years. Starting out with a classic tale of good vs evil that drives a stake through the hearts of nostalgic gamers everywhere, most Castlevania games see the player controlling a vampire hunter traversing through Dracula?s Castle to get to the Lord of Darkness himself and banish him back to the gates of hell. Subsequent installments see changes in the formula, with one renowned entry being the PS1 classic ?Castlevania: Symphony of the Night?. Utilizing action RPG elements and placing players in the role of Dracula?s son Alucard, it was an instantaneous hit the put the franchise back on the map. Later installments in different platforms met similar success, and a recent 3D entry in the form of 2010?s ?Castlevania: Lords of Shadow? saw a new turn for the new generation of console platforming. A sequel, Lords of Shadow 2, is currently in development and awaiting release.

Dead Space

?

?

If Resident Evil 4 redefined the franchise by replacing Survival Horror with Survival Action, the Dead Space franchise trumps that call by placing the fear back with the same manner of gameplay in the scariest setting ever ? deep cold space. First released in 2008 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows, players take control of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who joins a rescue team responding to a distress call from the interstellar mining ship called the U.S.S Ishimura. Taking a page from the Alien film franchise and Event Horizon, what Isaac finds there is more dead than alive, as dead bodies are resurrected as monstrous creatures called Necromorphs by a powerful artifact known as ?The Marker?. The game was a runaway success, and spawned spin-off animated movies and a 2011 sequel in the form of Dead Space 2. The third installment, Dead Space 3, is expected to be released this coming February.

Doom

?

?

A shooter that helped redefine the first-person shooting genre when it was released back in 1993, id Software?s Doom is a monster hit that?s seen several rereleases and sequels over the years. Focusing on a fictional character popularly known as ?Doomguy?, this science-fiction horror game has the protagonist battling the demons of hell while trying to survive and escape from a military base on Mars alive. ?It?s a genuine classic, and the game even saw a sequel/ remake of sorts in the form of Doom III in 2004, which is a retelling of the original game?s story with better visuals and graphics for the new age. That game recently saw a rerelease this month with Doom III: BFG for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. A movie adaptation was released in 2005, starring Karl Urban and Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson in it. A new game sequel, Doom 4, is currently in production

?

?

Parasite Eve

?

?

If Horror, action, and RPG combined to form a winning combination, then Square-Enix?s Parasite Eve probably comes out as a grand example of that formula and beyond. Originally released for the Playstation on March 1998, this unique hybrid of a game had a lovely protagonist in the form of Aya Brea, who battled monstrosities born of the power of Mitochondria. The primary antagonist, Eve, served to mature and deliver more mayhem that required Aya to upgrade and unlock abilities necessary to combat the various monstrosities and beings unleashed by her nemesis. The series spawned two more sequels; Parasite Eve II which abandons the active-time RPG formula and takes a more action game oriented approach ala Resident Evil, and a spin-off title called The 3rd Birthday for the PSP that?s more cinematic and shooter oriented.

Fatal Frame

?

?

Japanese horror has a place in video game fandom, and Fatal Frame proves that the formula is not all about guns and action to make a video game really scary. Known originally as Zero in Japan, the franchise deals with players as they traverse through haunted locations to solve mysteries and search for missing loved ones, all the while facing ghosts and ?defeating them? by taking photographs with a camera. The first game was released for the PS2, with a port later coming to the Xbox with enhanced visuals and gameplay features. Subsequent installments also saw release for the Wii and Nintendo 3DS, adding a layer of horror that required more bravery and interaction that spelled more frightening encounters with the paranormal.

Entertainer Is Injured When She Trips and Falls Over A Pallet Left In A Passageway

A singer/ dancer/ performer aboard a cruise ship is injured aboard the vessel when some wooden pallets were left in a ? crew member only ? passageway outside a theater. She was walking in a poorly lit backstage passageway to a small space the entertainers were given to change their wardrobes. She trips and falls over the pallets, sustaining a serious back injury. The pallets has been left behind after the ships stores were stocked the morning before.

The Vessel Is Unseaworthy

There is no question the cruise line vessel owes the entertainer a warranty of seaworthiness. Here, the entertainer?s injuries were caused by the wooden pallets which became part of the ship when they were placed in the passageway. The fact that the wooden pallets were placed in the passageway, and left there without warning signs or rope created an unseaworthy condition in the passageway on the ship.

The wooden pallets should have been properly stowed or taken off the ship. The placement of the unstable and dangerous wooden pallets in the dark passageway made the vessel not reasonably fit for it?s purpose. Finally, the unseaworthy condition proximately caused her injuries.

Cruise Line ? Crew Members and Jones Act Seaman

All sorts of crew members aboard cruise ships are Jones Act Seaman. Which means they qualify for powerful Seaman?s rights and remedies. Including: cooks, bartenders, food servers, entertainers, hair stylists, engineers, AB?s and the vessel?s officers. By and large, almost every person that works aboard a cruise ship may be eligible for powerful Seaman?s rights and remedies. The includes unseaworthiness ? which this case study concerns ? and Jones Act negligence and maintenance and cure.

You Have To Ready To Fight For The Compensation You Are Entitled To Under The Jones Act

Fact is, if you get seriously injured while working on a cruise ship, you will find out that you are no longer of any use to the vessel. In many instances, you will find it challenging to get the compensation you are entitled to from the cruise line. Instead, you may have to fight to get the compensation you are entitled to under the law.

Apps in Education: Cool Public Service Apps

It is interesting to see the number of government agencies and departments starting to use apps to get their information across to a wider audience. These apps can be both public service announcements and a means to crowd source data in order to inform decision making. Here are a couple from Australia that I really like - some because of the design, graphics and visual representation of the message, other because they assist the public in locating, accessing or experiencing public places, resources or amenities.

The first is an app that I was informed about a while ago. It was designed to get kids involved in the process of storm preparation. The graphics are fantastic and the gaming element is a clever tactic. This is a clever way to get kids to have conversations with their parents about emergency plans in case of natural disasters.

Mike Tyson gets Australian visa after NZ rejection

(AP) ? Australia granted Mike Tyson a visa Wednesday, one week after New Zealand barred the former heavyweight boxing champion from entering that country due to his 1992 rape conviction.

Officials carefully weighed the pros and cons of his visit and of his character given his criminal past before making the decision, said Cian Manton, a spokeswoman for Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

She said it was the first time Tyson had applied for a visa to Australia and he was warned the privilege could be revoked if he broke any laws.

"Given the purpose of his visit and the short duration, we considered the risk of him reoffending to be very low," Manton said.

The entertainment visa he was granted covers the duration of Tyson's five-city Australian tour starting next month.

He was scheduled to visit both countries on the "Day of the Champions" tour to give inspirational talks about overcoming adversity in his life. New Zealand immigration authorities initially granted him a visa before a charity withdrew its support and officials reversed their decision.

Tyson served three years in prison for rape.

(AP) ? Prosecutors say as many as half a dozen of Jerry Sandusky's molestation victims will be heard at his sentencing hearing.

On Tuesday, a judge will sentence the former Penn State assistant football coach on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. The 68-year-old Sandusky faces the likelihood of a sentence that would keep him in prison for the rest of his life.

Lead prosecutor Joe McGettigan said Monday that the victims would speak at the hearing.

Sandusky also is expected to speak and to assert his innocence.

Defense attorney Karl Rominger says the sentencing proceeding may be over in less than two hours.

Sandusky plans to appeal his conviction on charges he abused 10 boys over 15 years, including attacks inside Penn State athletics facilities.

New Zero Electric Motorcycles for 2013

The electric fever has touched the automotive industry in more ways than you could even imagine. The world of motorcycling is currently undergoing a conversion from rumbling, smoky, non-economic engines to environmentally friendly propulsion systems. Now, Zero Motorcycles, one of the most fabled manufacturers of electric two-wheelers, has recently presented their new bikes for 2013.

The purposes of their newest creations are more power, higher speed and better fuel efficiency. The vehicles in this brand new series, the Zero MX for dirt tracks, the powerful Zero DS, the Zero XU for beginners, the 2013 Zero FX and the two-seater Zero S, will reportedly reach maximum speeds of around 95 mph (153 km/h) and will achieve ranges of up to 100 miles.

As you have read above, each model is destined for an individual purpose. For example, the beginners? bike Zero XU sports a 28 HP engine that can reach top speeds of around 77 mph (124 km/h) and can reach ranges of up to 70 miles. The Zero MX, which is quite similar in appearance to the previous, has been equipped with mud fenders, stiffer shocks and knobby tires, being specifically destined to be used on dirt surfaces.

It sports a bigger engine than the XU, though, being able to deliver 54 HP and reaching a maximum speed of 84 mph (135 km/h) on dusty roads. And there?s the Zero S, a stunning two-seater motorcycle which will actually be one of the top electric bikes in the world. It can reach top speeds of 95 mph (153 km/h) and, if driven carefully and not too fast, ranges of up to 137 miles in cities.

In terms of costs, the figures are fortunately not as high as we expected. For example, the Zero XU, the least costly of the lot, will reportedly start at $7,995, while the Zero DS and Zero S will go as high as $13,995.

(AP Photo/Matt Dunham, left; Kyodo News, right) JAPAN OUT, MANDATORY CREDIT, NO LICENSING IN CHINA, FRANCE, HONG KONG, JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA

WHO WON?

Britain's John Gurdon, 79, formerly of Magdalene College of Cambridge University and currently with the Gurdon Institute that he founded, and Japan's Shinya Yamanaka, 50, who worked at the Gladstone Institute in San Francisco and Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan. He is now at Kyoto University.

FOR WHAT?

In 1962, the year Yamanaka was born, Gurdon showed that the DNA from specialized cells of frogs, like skin or intestinal cells, could be used to generate new tadpoles. In 2006, Yamanaka showed that mature cells could be turned back into primitive cells, which in turn could be prodded into different kinds of mature cells.

SIGNIFICANCE

The discoveries showed that the body's mature, specialized cells can be reprogrammed into stem cells ? a discovery that scientists hope to turn into new treatments without destroying human embryos. Scientists want to harness the reprogramming to create replacement tissues for treating diseases such as Parkinson's, cystic fibrosis and diabetes and for studying the roots of diseases in the laboratory.

WHAT THEY SAID

Yamanaka: "We still have a lot of work to do on our research, so I was really surprised. I have two feelings, gratitude and also responsibility. Even though we have received this prize, we have not really accomplished what we need to. I feel a deep sense of duty and responsibility." Gurdon:

"It is particularly pleasing to see how purely basic research, originally aimed at testing the genetic identity of different cell types in the body, has turned out to have clear human health prospects."

NTT DoCoMo Grip UI detects how you hold your phone, make short work for tiny hands

Maintaining your balance on a packed train while trying to handle the big-screened smartphones of today is often a tough challenge. At least NTT DoCoMo thinks so, offering up a new interface to avoid such issues -- and throw in some extra gesture shortcuts. Gesture UI is a combination hardware-software prototype that the Japanese carrier is showing at this year's CEATEC showcase in Japan. Consisting of a trio of grip sensors located along the two edges and across the back of the prototype phone, these can each detect up to five levels of pressure from your hand, as well as detecting how you're holding the device.

This data is then channeled into the user interface, which allows the user to customize what the device does under certain conditions. We saw demonstrations of grip "shortcuts" to send you back to the homescreen, while holding certain portions of the sides would launched pre-assigned apps -- pinching at the top of this device launched the internet browser. Once inside the browser, the Grip UI also allows the user to transfer across to other programs without returning to the aforementioned homescreen, using a combination of gripping and swiping across the display. We get a handle on the prototype UI inside DoCoMo's imaginary train right after the break.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Bulls eye Spain, Bernanke and jobs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street will open October with a busy week, highlighted by low expectations for global manufacturing data and the U.S. jobs report. Any positive surprises may help lift the market.

Spain is the wild card. And if it's played well, then the bulls might dance.

The S&P 500 <.inx><.spx> finished its third positive quarter in the last four on Friday, despite suffering its largest weekly percentage decline since June. For the past three months, the S&P 500 gained 5.9 percent - its best third quarter since 2010. In contrast, the index was down 1.3 percent for the week.

The benchmark S&P 500 earlier this month reached its highest level since late 2007. Yet uncertainty remains over whether stocks can hold their gains against the headwinds of a struggling economy. That explains, in part, the retreat over the last several days.

The S&P 500 hit a high of 1,474.51 in mid-September before pulling back by a bit more than 2 percent. A run at 1,500 seems possible, but the flurry of economic and world events ahead probably will prevent a major advance in the coming week.

Bulls are betting that last week's Spanish budget proposals will be a preamble to a bailout request by Mariano Rajoy's government. The move would be seen as a first step to get the finances of the euro zone's fourth-largest economy in order and would clear some of the market uncertainty regarding the euro zone crisis.

Monetary policy is also on the list of market catalysts this week. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to speak on Monday and the minutes of the latest FOMC meeting are set for release on Thursday. The week's agenda includes meetings of the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan.

Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, said he believes "we could see a rebound" this week "if we get some of the stars aligning and have Spain ask for a bailout, the ECB announcing favorable terms for that bailout, and if we see the Bank of Japan announce further monetary intervention.

"If Spain and the ECB don't deliver, we could set ourselves up for a further lateral move in the markets," Jacobsen added. "A negative would be if Rajoy flat-out denies that they need a bailout."

The ECB and BOJ are set to meet on Thursday, with the Bank of Japan's meeting extending until Friday.

FACTORIES, JOBS AND THE U.S. ELECTION

Chinese factory and business conditions data will kick off a numbers-heavy calendar for markets. Manufacturing PMI, due on Monday, is expected to show a second straight month of contraction.

A snapshot of U.S. manufacturing activity will be provided on Monday when the Institute for Supply Management releases its September index. The September ISM reading is expected to show another month of contraction, but at a slightly slower pace than in August. On Wednesday, the ISM will release its U.S. services-sector Purchasing Managers' Index, which could show a slight deceleration in the pace of growth in the non-manufacturing sector.

"We have Chinese economic data over the weekend, and we'll see how markets react on Monday," said Wasif Latif, vice president of equity investments at San Antonio, Texas-based USAA Investment Management.

"It seems like the market is bracing for bad numbers, meaning if they're not as bad, it could be market-positive," Latif said.

Non-farm payrolls for September, due on Friday, are forecast to gain 115,000, while the U.S. unemployment rate is seen ticking up 0.1 percent from August to 8.2 percent in September.

The jobs data will come on the heels of the first of three U.S. presidential debates, scheduled for Wednesday night.

With just one month to go before election day on November 6, Wall Street will watch the economic data more closely than it usually does. In a year when the incumbent president is campaigning for a second term, the country's economic numbers tend to become more positive as election day approaches.

The U.S. stock market also tends to gain in years when incumbents are re-elected, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

For the year, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> is up 10 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> is up 14.6 percent and the Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> is up 19.6 percent.

Recent poll numbers point to a strengthening lead by President Barack Obama, but a weak payrolls reading could give some hope to Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"If Romney doesn't turn the ship with a very strong (debate)performance, the president is going to win," said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He said the trend in the polls has taken away some of the market uncertainty regarding the presidential election. He added that an ECB- or Spain-related headline out of Europe on Thursday could overcome almost anything that would happen Wednesday night during the debate.

"I think the market is coming to terms with the fact the president is ahead, and unless something significant changes, (he) will prevail."

Guns N' Roses have been touring pretty steadily over the past few years, but Rose has agreed to very few interviews. He did appear on VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show"?in November of 2011, where he explained why he's often late to his shows. "A lot of this goes way, way back to 1991, when we were super late going on stage," Rose said. "I should not have been on tour. I went on tour for three reasons ? my manager booked a tour without authorization. If Slash died of heroin,? it's my fault. And Slash pushing me."?

A quick glance at Ticketmaster reveals that plenty of seats are still available for the Las Vegas shows, which likely explains Rose's decision to agree to this interview.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, though Rose opted to not attend the ceremony. Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Steven Adler performed with Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy in Axl's place.

On Oct. 20th and 21st, Guns N' Roses will perform rare acoustic sets at Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit.?
