The last time we saw Ben Wu, he was busy hammering away at Quantum Phantom -- a prototype program that allows users to manipulate their desktops with a simple webcam. Now, the engineer has expanded the concept to smartphones, as well, with a system that effectively turns any camera-equipped handset into a wireless mouse. To achieve this, Wu hooked up his Android phone to his PC via WiFi and used the IP Webcam app to create a video stream server. The results, by Wu's own admission, aren't exactly elegant (due to an unwieldy configuration process and low-res camera), though he still managed to use his creation to sketch an onscreen smiley face. Hunting rabbits is made easier with using ferrets as they chase rabbits out of their holes into waiting nets. They are also kept as working pets to hunt mice and rats mostly in United States. More than seven million ferrets are found in domestic households in the United States.?They are more independent than dogs, more playful than kittens and remain playful all their lives. House mice are nocturnal and feed on seeds, plants, and insects. The female can give birth to 4-7 young every 30 days, but due to the high level of predators, most of the young do not survive for more than a few months.?Life expectancy of mice is 1.5-3 years.?Domesticated mice are descendants of the house mouse. STANFORD, Calif. Reconnecting severed blood vessels is mostly done the same way today with sutures as it was 100 years ago, when the French surgeon Alexis Carrel won a Nobel Prize for advancing the technique. Now, a team of researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine has developed a sutureless method that appears to be a faster, safer and easier alternative.
In animal studies, a team led by Stanford microsurgeon Geoffrey Gurtner, MD, used a poloxamer gel and bioadhesive rather than a needle and thread to join together blood vessels, a procedure called vascular anastomosis. Results of the research will be published online Aug. 28 in Nature Medicine. Lead authors of the study were Stanford postdoctoral scholar Edward Chang, MD, and surgery resident Michael Galvez, MD.
The big drawback of sutures is that they are difficult to use on blood vessels less than 1 millimeter wide. Gurtner began thinking about alternatives to sutures about a decade ago. "Back in 2002, I was chief of microsurgery at Bellevue in New York City, and we had an infant 10 to 12 months old who had a finger amputated by the spinning wheel of an indoor exercise bike," said Gurtner, senior author of the study and professor of surgery. "We struggled with reattaching the digit because the blood vessels were so small maybe half a millimeter. The surgery took more than five hours, and at the end we were only able to get in three sutures.
"Everything turned out OK in that case," he continued. "But what struck me was how the whole paradigm of sewing with a needle and thread kind of falls apart at that level of smallness."
Sutures are troublesome in other ways, too. They can lead to complications, such as intimal hyperplasia, in which cells respond to the trauma of the needle and thread by proliferating on the inside wall of the blood vessel, causing it to narrow at that point. This increases the risk of a blood clot getting stuck and obstructing blood flow. In addition, sutures may trigger an immune response, leading to inflamed tissue that also increases the risk of a blockage.
The new method could sidestep these problems. "Ultimately, this has the potential to improve patient care by decreasing amputations, strokes and heart attacks while reducing health-care costs," the authors write in the study.
Earlier in his career, as Gurtner contemplated a better way of joining together blood vessels, he considered whether ice could be used to fill the lumen, the inner space of the blood vessel, to keep both ends open to their full diameter long enough to glue them together. Not feasible, he concluded. "Water turns to ice quite slowly and you would have to drop the temperature of the surgical site a lot from 98.6 degrees to 32 degrees Fahrenheit," he said.
Shortly after arriving at Stanford in 2005, Gurtner approached fellow faculty member Gerald Fuller, PhD, professor of chemical engineering and the Fletcher Jones II Professor in the School of Engineering, about whether he knew of a substance that could be turned easily from a liquid to a solid and back to a liquid again, and that would also be safe to use in vascular surgery. Fuller immediately suggested a Food and Drug Administration-approved thermoreversible poloxamer called Poloxamer 407. It is constructed of polymer blocks whose properties can be reversed by heating.
Fuller teamed up with Jayakumar Rajadas, PhD, director of the Stanford Biomaterials and Advanced Drug Delivery Laboratory, to modify the poloxamer so that it would become solid and elastic when heated above body temperature but dissolve harmlessly into the bloodstream when cooled. The poloxamer then was used to distend both openings of a severed blood vessel, allowing researchers to glue them together precisely.
The researchers used a simple halogen lamp to heat the gel. In tests on animals, the technique was found to be five times faster than the traditional hand-sewn method, according to the study. It also resulted in considerably less inflammation and scarring after two years. The method even worked on extremely slim blood vessels those only 0.2 mm wide which would have been too tiny and delicate for sutures. "That's where it really shines," Gurtner said.
Dermabond, a surgical sealant, was used to attach the ends of the blood vessels together.
Poloxamers have been used before as a vehicle for delivering drugs, including chemotherapeutics, vaccines and anti-viral therapies. Researchers have used Poloxamer 407 to occlude blood vessels in experimental animals for the purpose of evaluating the gel's safety and efficacy in so-called "beating heart surgery," in which certain vessels need to be temporarily blocked to improve visibility for the surgeons performing a coronary artery bypass.
Although other sutureless methods have been developed, they generally have not produced better outcomes, the authors said. "Often, the use of microclips, staples or magnets is itself traumatic to blood vessels leading to failure rates comparable to or higher than sutured anastomoses," they wrote.
"This is a novel approach to anastomosis that could play a valuable role in microvascular surgery," said Frank Sellke, MD, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Brown University Medical Center and associate editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, who was not involved in the study. "But it really needs to show that it holds up in clinical trials."
The authors say further testing on large animals is needed before human trials can begin, but they note that all of the components used in the technique are already approved by the FDA. "This technology has the potential to progress rapidly from the 'bench to bedside,'" they write.
Gurtner said he believes the new technique could satisfy a huge unmet need and prove especially useful in minimally invasive surgeries, in which manipulating sutures takes on a whole new level of difficulty.
Michael Longaker, MD, the Deane P. and Louise Mitchell Professor in the School of Medicine and a co-author of the study, called the technique a "potential game-changer."
"When you're bringing together hollow tubes, whether they're large structures, like the colon or the aorta, or a small structure, like a vein in the finger of a child, you're always worried about lining them up directly and effectively sealing them," Longaker said. "The technique that Dr. Gurtner has pioneered could allow surgeons to perform anastomosis more quickly and with improved precision."
He continued: "Coming up with this solution was the result of the classic Stanford model of bringing together researchers from a variety of disciplines."

Estate planning can seem overwhelming, but it is one of the best ways to make sure your final wishes are carried out, as well as protecting your heirs. Many people are not sure whether they need a will or a trust or even what those two items entail.
Obviously, we all know that a will is a legal document that distributes your property to named beneficiaries upon your death. What many people do not know is that in order for beneficiaries to receive your assets, the property passed to beneficiaries by the will must go through the probate process. Under Arizona law, the probate process takes six months to a year to complete, and on rare occasions even more time. Not until the probate process is at an end, will your beneficiaries receive any assets.
Another common option is to create a revocable living trust. Within Arizona and Tucson estate law, this trust will help your beneficiaries avoid the probate process. With a trust, all of your assets are transferred and essentially owned by the trust. The trust identifies which beneficiaries receive your property and, unlike a will, the property can be transferred to the heir without going through a time-consuming and potentially expensive probate process.
On the face of it, a trust sounds like the ideal way to ensure that your loved ones are quickly and easily accommodated. However, while a will is a simple, inexpensive document, a trust takes much more time to create. A will can be created by an individual without a lawyer?s help. With a trust, it is important to find an attorney experienced in Tucson estate law. Because of this, a trust costs much more than a will. In addition, even with a trust you will need at least a simple will that details what will happen to any property not expressly discussed in your trust.
Trusts are generally the best way to go if you have a decent-sized estate and wish to avoid probate. But, even with a small estate, there are several benefits to creating a trust instead of just a will. Perhaps you have a child that is mentally or physically disabled and receiving state assistance. With a will, the child?s inheritance can potentially be taken by the state and the government benefits can be interrupted. However, with a properly drafted trust, the disabled beneficiary?s inheritance will be used for their special needs, and the government benefits will not be interrupted. Additionally, if the trust maker is currently in a second marriage, a trust creates a legal duty for the trustee or surviving spouse to distribute assets to the children of both spouses, which prevents the children of one spouse or the other from being disinherited. A trust also will protect your beneficiaries from creditors, greedy ex-spouses, and other predators that might want to sue for a piece of the inheritance.
Yet another advantage of trusts is that if the trust maker becomes incapacitated, your Successor Trustee will step in and can direct the medical and financial affairs of the trust maker. A will, however, does not allow for this. Instead, a family member must petition the court for a guardianship and conservatorship, a court-involved, time consuming, and expensive process.

Establish a Safe Workout Routine ? While you don?t have to lift weights and do strenuous aerobic workouts, you should have a safe workout routine established. Your routine should include stretching and exercising in some way every day. To effectively fight the signs of aging, you need to keep your routine well-rounded and include adequate amounts of weight-resistance training, cardiovascular activities and stretching. When you give adopt this type of safe workout routine, you will feel great and avoid serious injury because you aren?t overworking any one area while ignoring another. Finally, speak to your doctor about the workout routine you?re considering and make sure he/she feels it is safe for you to do.
Don?t make the mistake of thinking that because you are climbing the ?age ladder? that you have to look your age. If you want to keep a young and healthy looking body naturally, then keep your body in motion and eat a balanced diet.

However, there are limits to the use of BMI as a health assessment tool since it may overestimate body fat in athletes and other individuals who are well-built; and it may underestimate body fat in the elderly or those who have lost muscle mass. Another method used to as a health assessment tool is called Waist Circumference Factor, which is simply the measurement of the distance around a person?s abdomen.? Based on an advisory released by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, those who are at risk of developing heart problems and other chronic diseases are women with a waist circumference of over 35 inches; and men with a waist circumference of more than 40 inches.? For Asian populations, the World Health Organization has recommended that women maintain a waist circumference of not over 31 inches; and not more that 35 inches for men.

The widely popular cartoonist, who works late into the night, left his studio at 4 a.m. Thursday, the relative and several activists familiar with the attack told The Associated Press.
A jeep with tinted windows soon started trailing him and cut him off on a Damascus street. Four masked gunmen dragged him out of his car, bundled him into the jeep and drove him to the airport road just outside Damascus, beating him and making threats all the while.
After news of the attack broke, online social networking sites exploded with angry postings.
"Assad's Syria is the burial ground of talent," read a posting on Twitter.
"Ali Ferzat, your innovation will stand in the face of their cowardice and hate," wrote Suheir Atassi, a prominent Syrian pro-democracy activist.
Pictures published on online forums Thursday showed the artist in a hospital bed with heavily bandaged hands and a bandage above his right eye.
Omar Idilbi, a spokesman for the Local Coordination Committees, an activist group that helps organize and track the uprising, blamed security forces for the attack, although Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the identity of the attackers could not be confirmed.
Great hopes dashed
Ferzat has said he had great hopes for Assad when he became president in 2000 after inheriting power from his late father. But in recent years Ferzat has become a vehement critic of the regime, particularly as the military launches a brutal crackdown on the country's protest movement.
This week, he published a cartoon on his website showing Assad with a packed suitcase, hitching a ride with a fleeing Gadhafi. Many of his cartoons directly criticize Assad, even though caricatures of the president are forbidden.
Ferzat's website, where he published his cartoons and satirical commentary, was inaccessible Thursday after the attack. "This account has been suspended," reads a message on the website, http://www.ali-ferzat.com/.
"There are two things in this life that cannot be crushed ? the will of God and the will of the people," Ferzat told the AP this month during a telephone interview from Damascus.
Ferzat benefited from Assad's moves to open up society in Syria during a period that came to be known as the Damascus Spring. Shortly after Assad inherited power from his father, he allowed Ferzat to publish the country's first private newspaper in decades.
The satirical weekly Al-Domari ? or The Lamplighter ? was an instant hit, with copies of each issue selling out a few hours after hitting the stands. It was soon shut down, however, as Assad began cracking down on dissent after the Damascus Spring quickly lost steam.
Human rights groups said Assad's forces have killed more than 2,000 people since the uprising against his autocratic rule erupted in mid-March, touched off by the wave of revolutions sweeping the Arab world.
