Final Space Shuttle Crew Leaves Plaque on Atlantis (SPACE.com)

HOUSTON ? Chris Ferguson almost forgot to leave it on board.

Caught up in the moment of having just landed the space shuttle, ending NASA's 30 year shuttle program after 135 flights, commander Ferguson followed his crew out of shuttle Atlantis and only then realized he had forgotten about the plaque.

"If I was as clear thinking as I wish I was right after landing, I would have put it right on there but I had to have someone run back and pull it out of my saddlebag and put it on there for me," Ferguson said Friday (July 22), a day after landing, after his return home to Houston.

The small plaque, which was sized to fit perfectly over the center display screen in Atlantis' cockpit, was already a bit of an "afterthought" by the STS-135 crew, one devised with the help of the astronauts' simulator training team. Still it was the thought that counts.

"The inscription is from the heart," said Ferguson.

"It was basically a tribute to the people who had worked on the space shuttle program since day one thanking them for their dedication," Ferguson told collectSPACE.com a few hours after landing, revealing the plaque's existence for the first time, "to let them know how much we thought about the work that they do, from the astronauts, from the people who get to operate the vehicle that they maintain."?

"A lot of people think that the astronauts live in Florida and that we rub elbows with these folks every day. But we don't, we live far away and sometimes it is a little bit of an effort to get out here and give them the thanks and the praise they deserve," said Ferguson. Keeping the dream alive

The blue plaque with its white writing, which was adorned with a gold-color rendition of the STS-135 crew's mission emblem, was inscribed as follows:

?This plaque flew on the final Space Shuttle Mission in July, 2011. From the fortunate few who have served in space to the thousands who make spaceflight a reality, thank you for keeping the dream alive. Your passion for these amazing space ships will always stand as proof of what this country can do when it dares to be bold!?

The words repeated some of the same sentiments shared by Ferguson and his crewmates pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim from orbit. Numerous times throughout the nearly two-week flight, the astronauts called down to Mission Control to give their thanks to the many people on the ground who made the shuttle program a success. The plaque was also among the small stash of mementos that the astronauts flew on Atlantis to mark the shuttle's end. During the mission, the crew revealed banners that paid tribute to the shuttle workforce and to the city of Houston ? presented after landing to the Kennedy Space Center and the mayor of Houston respectively ? as well as placed a U.S. flag carried on the first shuttle mission in 1981 and a model of the shuttle autographed by program managers aboard the International Space Station.

Where the plaque stays, be it on Atlantis or somewhere else, will be up to those preparing the shuttle for its display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

"We didn't want to make it permanent. We certainly didn't want to deface Atlantis. We wanted to leave it up to the ground processing crew to decide what to do with what we left behind," said Ferguson.

The STS-135 plaque was not the first time a crew had left a parting message aboard a spacecraft. In fact, it wasn't even the first time one was left on Atlantis. Continue reading at collectSPACE.com.

Super Website Directory ? Ticks Responsible For Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is usually the kind of disease which a doctor cannot identify. Mostly US citizens are prone to such ticks and thus go through lyme disease usually compared with other individuals. People who?re suffering from the disease are definitely facing an extremely difficult time. It is not there is no way to treat it or cure this in an effective way.

The incubation period of this specific sickness is 10-14 days and after this total blown signs and symptoms are noticed. Coping with Lyme disease could be obviously very difficult for the reason that generally the illness is misdiagnosed, leading to taking drugs plus medicines that don?t function, and also you and then suffering continuing sickness as well as agony from the sickness. If left neglected then this kind of disease can be life harmful. You cannot have a risk along with your life so it is better if you find a way to treat it when you get affected. Lyme disease contagious features do not occur and the bacterium causing this condition are only in deer and mice. The infection is transmitted to individuals because of the Ixodes ticks as soon as ticks infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi attack human beings. lyme disease signs and symptoms is caused by tick byte.

In North America black legged ticks are the major carriers of the disease while in Europe the lambs tick as well as castor bean tick are the main culprits. There are usually over 100 various signs of Lyme disease, which sometimes cause it to quite confusing for physicians to narrow down the actual signs into a particular disease. The feature of lyme disease symptoms include a rash often known as erythema migrans. This specific rash is normally seen in regions near the tick bite. The circular ?bull?s eye? rash can be an indicator of Lyme that?s quite recognizable. Not necessarily everyone with Lyme will develop this kind of rash, but people who do usually start seeing it within a few days. If the Lyme disease is going on excessive phase then individuals will suffer from mental abnormalities similar to schizophrenia. In short, lyme disease treatment , is something everyone should know about.

Its true that having Lyme disease is quite harmful and also uncomfortable but in cases where it?s symptoms are caught or diagnosed in time in that case it can be cured. If it?s left to move to a progressing level in that case sometimes it is very hard to get a treatment done. You need to ensure that you find the best solution as you cannot afford to compromise with your health and fitness. Lyme disease is normally cured with a quick antibiotic course effectively and frequently suggested in the highly developed staging of the diseases. Although several Lyme patients have obtained good results with long-term antibiotics, many patients getting cured by using antibiotics have got retrieved 100% for months or even years just to experience a relapse.

We have all heard about a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) way of Lyme diagnostic tests which is considered a ?DNA nesting? test method which detects a genomic DNA of the Lyme disease-causing spirochete in the blood. Mostly in autumn, ticks attached with our pets and small children needs to be seen properly. As we know deer ticks are little and it bite without noticing anything. For a well-balanced diet, it?s required that the poison because of the germs should be removed. Lyme disease is totally curable when treated at beginning stage. However if it?s overlooked many severe complications can be found like Chronic joint inflammation (Lyme arthritis), particularly on the knee, Nerve symptoms such as facial palsy and also neuropathy, Cognitive disorders, Heart rhythm irregularities, Memory loss and so on.

How to Set Up DHCP Reservations So You Never Have to Check a Local IP Address Again [Networking]

How to Set Up DHCP Reservations So You Never Have to Check a Local IP Address AgainChecking your computer's IP address every time you need it can get tedious. Here's how to set up DHCP reservations on your router so that each computer in your house has the same IP address all the time.

Whether you're using BitTorrent's web UI, forwarding ports for gaming, or streaming media to your phone, you sometimes need to know the IP addresses of your computers. The problem is, if you use DHCP (as most people do), those computers get re-assigned IP addresses every time you reboot them?which means you have to check what it is every time. You can avoid this hassle, however, with something called DHCP Reservations, which let you reserve specific IPs for each computer on your network. That way, they'll always have the same IP address and you never need to worry about checking it again.

Note: If you've heard of static IP addresses before, this is very similar. Since you manage it all from the router, though, it's a bit easier to set up. If, for some reason, you can't use DHCP reservations, you can set up a static IP on each of your computers instead, but this is our preferred method.

Many routers support DHCP reservations out of the box, but if they don't, you can always install the DD-WRT firmware, which adds the support to many more routers. Every router is a bit different, but in general, here's how to set it up:

  1. Head to your router's configuration tool by typing in your router's IP address in your browser's navigation bar. Usually this is something like 192.168.0.1. You can check it by running ipconfig in a Command Prompt, or heading to System Preferences > Network on a Mac.
  2. Find the DHCP reservation setting. This could also be called "DHCP Static Lease" or something similar. On my router, it was under the "Gateway" category.
  3. Head to the computer for which you want to reserve an IP address and find its MAC address. Once again, you can find this by typing ipconfig into a Windows Command Prompt, or by going to System Preferences > Network on a Mac, clicking on your Wi-Fi card or Ethernet port, hitting Advanced, and going to the Ethernet tab. Your MAC address will be in the form 00:00:00:00:00:00. Note that a Wi-Fi card and Ethernet port will have two different MAC addresses, and you can't assign them both to the same IP, so pick the one you use primarily.
  4. Type that computer's MAC address into the first entry in the DHCP Reservation setting. Then, type in the IP address that you want to reserve for that machine. Hit Apply, or whatever button is available to you.
  5. Repeat with any other computers that you want to reserve

How to Set Up DHCP Reservations So You Never Have to Check a Local IP Address AgainYou should now have a good list of computers with reserved IP addresses, like mine shown to the left. Note that you might have to renew your DHCP licenses on your computers for them to actually start using those IP addresses. You can do this by running ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew in a Windows Command Prompt, or by going to System Preferences > Network on a Mac, turning your Ethernet or Wi-Fi card off, and then back on again. If you then check your IP address (either with ipconfig on Windows or by checking the Network Preference Pane on your Mac), you should see that they have their new reserved IPs, which they'll use every time you turn them on. Note that this only changes the local IP addresses, so it only works when you're trying to access something on your network. If you're accessing it over the internet, like a Subsonic server, you'll still need to check the global IP address of that machine.

Women with Breast Cancer Anxious as FDA Revokes Approval for Avastin (ContributorNetwork)

The FDA held hearings over whether to revoke the authorization for Avastin, a drug manufactured by Genetech, to treat women with advanced stage breast cancer. The decision, to withdraw approval, has roused passions among patients and doctors alike.

Avastin slows the spread of cancer by inhibiting a protein that creates blood vessels that feed tumors, thus choking them off. Avastin has already been approved for colon, lung, kidney, and brain cancers. Provisional approval for breast cancer occurred in 2008.

When an FDA panel voted to revoke approval for the drug for breast cancer last year, it was claimed that it was doing so on effectiveness grounds. However many suspect that the decision to revoke approval had more to do with cost -- Avastin is very expensive with treatment costing $8,000 a month -- than with effectiveness.

While studies suggest that Avastin does not extend the lives of most breast cancer sufferers, it does extend the period of "progression free survival" doubling the time that women being treated are able to live without the horrific effects of end stage cancer. In other words, Avastin may not extend life, but it does extend the quality of life.

When the decision was first announced, many suggested that it was the first act in what Sarah Palin has called "the death panels", a decision taken to deny patients a drug that would enhance the quality of their lives solely out of financial considerations.

There is also some evidence that for a few women, Avastin actually does extend life, even putting the cancer into remission. The case of the mother of Josh Turnage, who had been diagnosed with a particularly virulent form of breast cancer, has been pointed out by those who want the approval of Avastin to remain. After a course of Avastin with chemotherapy, Ms. Turnage became cancer free, which she has remained for over two years thanks to a course of Avastin alone.

If nothing else, research into how Ms. Turnage was able to beat cancer with Avastin should be conducted while other women suffering from breast cancer are allowed to take the drug. One hopes that the FDA will see the wisdom in that.
