Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Top 'Celebs Gone Good'1676499

DoSomething.org's annual list ranks the 20 most charity-friendly stars.
By Terri Schwartz

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and George Clooney better have received something nice from Santa this year, because they certainly weren't on his naughty list. Those three toplined DoSomething.org's Top 20 Celebs Gone Good, the organization's annual roundup of the most charity-friendly stars in the business.

This is Gaga's second year in a row at the #1 spot. In 2011 she dedicated much of her time to putting an end to bullying and even started a new charitable organization called Born This Way. The "Marry the Night" singer did plenty more to help out those less fortunate in 2011, including auctioning off a nude sketch for charity and performing at the Bill Clinton Foundation fundraiser. However, this was really Bieber's year to shine. He rocketed up DoSomething.org's list from #10 last year to #2 this year. It helps that Bieber donated some of his profits from his Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, and his self-named perfume to various charitable organizations. Bieber also kept up his work with Pencils of Promise, a group that has built 41 schools in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was founded by his manager's brother.

Rounding out the top five were Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. This was a year for celeb power couples, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clocking at #8, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at #12 and newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert at #14. Other notable standouts this year were Demi Lovato at #10, Lea Michele making her charitable debut at #16, Daniel Radcliffe at #17, Miley Cyrus at #18 and Taylor Swift rounding out the list at #20. What do you think of DoSomething.org's list? Leave your comments below!

Huge protest demanding fair Russian elections hits Moscow

Russian protesters angry at what they say are rigged elections and the authoritarian ways of Vladimir Putin, flooded Moscow today demanding change.

At least 50,000 protesters flooded a downtown Moscow avenue Saturday to demand honest elections, in an impressive show of strength that dwarfed a rally two weeks ago and affirmed that a surging pro-democracy mood among Russia's frustrated middle class is not likely to fade soon.

Even police said the crowd was much larger than the earlier one on Bolotnaya Square, which was hailed as the biggest protest rally in Moscow since the collapse of the USSR 20 years ago.

"I see enough people to take the Kremlin right now," anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny told the wildly cheering crowd.

Mr. Navalny, who was imprisoned for 15 days for taking part in the post-election protest, is best known as the author of the hyper-popular phrase "party of rogues and thieves" used to describe Vladimir Putin's United Russia.

"But we are a peaceful force, we won?t do it ? yet. But if the rogues and thieves continue trying to deceive us and lie to us, we will come for it. (Power) belongs to us," he added.

People waved homemade signs, with a staggering variety of messages, and many wore the white ribbons that have emerged as the symbol of Russia's "Winter Revolution."

Most said they hadn't come out to support any particular political force or leader but just to express their anger over what they believe was a stolen parliamentary election that returned the United Russia party with a diminished but still dominant 50 percent share of the seats.

More generally, the mostly youthful crowd seemed fed up with the Putin-era system of "managed democracy," which features limited electoral choices, a straitjacketed media and unaccountable, corrupt, and often arrogant authorities.

"We're tired of all the lies, the endless corruption, and feel like we are ready to participate in making decisions," said Vladimir Kuvshinsky, a 30-something network administrator in an IT firm. "We don't want another tyrant, we want a normal government. And we don't want our opinions to be treated like garbage anymore."

Most protesters focused their frustration on Mr. Putin, who has effectively been in charge of Russia for the past 12 years and announced last September that he will seek election as president under the banner of United Russia, which could see him running the Kremlin for another 12 years.

"We don't want 12 more years of Putin's dictatorship," said Ksenia Atarova, who described herself as a writer and critic. "The people have woken up at last, and they want fair elections and a chance to voice their resentment about a lot of things that are happening in this country. We're not going back into the box."

The Overwhelmed Small Business Owner's Guide to Simplicity

We have more ideas and responsibilities than we have time in a day. Plus, every piece of success seems to come with new challenges.? In fact, opportunities come from the challenges that we?ve learned how to maximize.? And since we can?t control everything that happens, we might as well learn how to move forward in spite of it.

Overwhelmed work

If being overwhelmed is your issue, then start with one thing at a time.

One new lesson a month.?

You can learn it by reading a book, completing an online program, attending a local marketing class. However you choose to learn the lesson, find one key point and focus in on it until you understand it enough to use it.

In this information age, we tend to ?spot? read and ?half? know. In turn, we know about things, but we don?t know how to use them. We don?t know how to make them work for our business. So break this cycle on purpose.

And you don?t have to do the legwork yourself. Assign it to someone on your team, but make sure it?s learned and used to benefit your company before the month is over.

One new business relationship a week.

Has it been a year and you haven?t met new people, established new relationships, connected with clients? Then it?s time for an adjustment. Make a point to establish one new business relationship a week.

The key to what we want often lies in who we know. Expand your circle.

One new marketing action per month.?

Decide to use what you learn. Avoid being one of those people who always studies, but seldom acts. This is not school; we?re not cramming for a test in an hour. This is business; we are learning in order to move our companies and lives forward.

Implementing one new marketing strategy or updating one old one each month gives you a chance to understand, develop, execute, measure and tweak the strategy so that you get the most out of it.

One primary goal for each day.?

Sure, you have a list of 19 things to be before noon?who doesn?t? But can you really finish all that today? And if not, why is it on your list making you feel anxious and unsuccessful?

So take a look at that list and circle the most important thing on it. Choose to tackle that item today, no matter what. Go after what matters most everyday and you?ll find yourself much closer to your goal.

This holds true for down time as well. There should be some days in every month where your biggest assignment is to laugh hard and sleep often. You are human; rest matters.? And the best ideas tend to come after a break, so take your day. The work will be here when you get back.

Microsoft Booting Avatar Guns from Xbox Live Jan. 1

Xbox Avatar Guns

You can shoot your friends with all sorts of awesome and painful weaponry across Microsoft's Xbox Live service; you just can't give your virtual representation a digital gun ? that's a no-no.

According to a post by Epic Games community manager Will Kinsler, Microsoft is allegedly eliminating any and all gun avatar items from the Xbox Live Marketplace at the start of the new year. There's been no official word as to why, or how, this new policy came about, but there's a bit of a silver lining for those already sporting a virtual arsenal of digital accessories: You get to keep your firearms.

"Heads up! Starting on Jan. 1, 2012, the Lancer and Hammerburst avatar items will no longer be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace," writes Kinsler, referring to the iconic weaponry of Epic Games' Gears of War series. "If you've purchased the items prior to Jan. 1, you will be able to keep them. A new policy goes into effect for all gun-like avatar items on the Marketplace, so get them while they're hot."

We should note, however, that the alleged policy does indeed only refer to gun-like weaponry. Xbox Live avatars will still be able to swing lightsabers around all they want, for example ? ignoring the fact that a blade of superheated plasma could do just as much damage as a digital bullet or chainsaw attachment.

Microsoft currently lists a number of actions that avatars can't perform within Xbox titles that incorporate a user's digital persona into actual gameplay. The company currently prohibits violence that results in, "blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation," which would presumably prevent an avatar from running around in an actual game with a working, "gun-like item."

As well, perhaps the decision is in some way related to the Kinect's ability to map avatar movements to real-life gestures or the digital meeting grounds built into Xbox Live's Avatar Kinect application. But we're just speculating. Since those who already own guns will be free to keep them as part of their avatar's look, it's unclear as to what Microsoft hopes to accomplish by prohibiting the future sale of decorative avatar weaponry.

Be sure to check out the NeoGAF forums for a list of items that could suffer the gun-ban.

Block Radio Waves

car and remote controlSTOP AND GO: How can you block invisible waves? With a radio-controlled car and a few basic household materials, you can give this challenge a whirl and learn about electromagnetic waves in the process. Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Physics
Radio waves
Electricity
Electromagnetism
Wireless communication

Introduction
Have you ever wondered how a radio can receive music and news broadcasts over thin air? Radios, as well as radio-controlled cars and cell phones, all receive information via invisible waves. Some of these waves are called radio waves.

Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, a kind of energy that also includes visible light. Radio waves are not harmful but are in fact extremely useful for communicating across long distances. To send information using radio waves, a transmitting antenna sends out a radio wave at a certain frequency (which can tell us the size of the wave), and this is picked up by a receiving antenna. Some materials can block, or interfere with, radio waves. Have you ever noticed that you lose reception on a car radio or cell phone when you drive into a tunnel or an underground parking garage? What materials block the radio waves, and which ones allow the waves to easily pass through?

Background
A transmitting antenna, or transmitter, generates and sends out radio waves thanks to a specific electrical current. This is possible because inside transmitters are wires that allow negatively charged particles, called electrons, to flow through them, which makes an electrical current. When current flows within a wire, it generates an electromagnetic field around the wire. This electromagnetic field radiates out of the antenna in all directions, creating invisible radio waves.

When the electromagnetic radio waves hit a receiving antenna, or receiver, such as a radio, it generates a current inside of a wire in the receiver. (The reverse process of what happened in the transmitter when the current generated the electromagnetic field in the first place.) The receiver then processes the current back into the transmitted information, which, for a radio, allows you to hear music or other broadcasts. Some materials can block the radio waves that the transmitter generates, which can be tested by seeing whether a receiver can process and respond to information sent by a transmitter.

Materials
??? ?Radio-controlled car and its corresponding remote control (both with working batteries)
??? ?Cotton (such as a piece of clothing made from cotton)
??? ?Aluminum foil
??? ?Plastic wrap
??? ?Wax paper
??? ?Rubber glove
??? ?A smooth, wide open space to test drive your radio-controlled car

Preparation
??? ?First check the radio-controlled car and its remote control to make sure they both have fresh batteries. Check that the car runs well on the open space that you will be using.
??? ?Make sure you have enough of each material you want to test (the cotton, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, wax paper, and rubber glove) to completely cover the RC car remote control. Every covering should be loose enough so you can still operate the remote control buttons through it.

Procedure
??? ?Wrap the remote control in cotton. Make sure that the remote control is completely and securely covered so that there are not any openings or holes in the covering, and that it is covered loose enough so that you can still operate the controls.
??? ?Try to operate the radio-controlled car using the cotton-covered remote control. Does it work? Does the car move at all?
??? ?Remove the tested material from the remote control. Test to make sure that the car still works when it is not covered with any material.
??? ?Repeat this process using each different material separately. For which materials does the car still operate, and for which materials does the car not operate? Why do you think this is?
??? ?Extra: Are the wireless signals transmitted by other devices blocked by the same material(s) that you found could block the signals from the remote control in this activity? You can try this activity again but using other remote control devices, such as your TV or stereo remote. How do different wireless devices respond? Do you think they use similar or different types of waves?
??? ?Extra: Do you need to completely cover the radio-controlled car remote control to block its signal? Using the material(s) you found to block the signals from the remote control to the radio-controlled car, completely cover the remote control as you originally did in this activity, and then slowly remove the covering from the remote control while trying to operate the car. How much covering is needed to block the signal? Are some parts of the remote control more important to cover in order to block the signal?

Militant Hamas moves to join PLO umbrella (AP)

CAIRO ? The Hamas militant group has agreed to join the Palestine Liberation Organization ? a key step toward unifying the long-divided Palestinian leadership.

Hamas' leader Khaled Mashaal on Thursday joined a committee that will prepare for elections to the PLO leadership.

Those elections are likely years away but Mashaal's move means he will work with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, head of the rival Fatah party.

The PLO is the umbrella group of the Palestinian independence movement.

Thursday's development is an important step toward reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah ? which have been split since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.

Separate elections in the West Bank and Gaza for a unified parliament are tentatively set for next year.

Michele Bachmann Calls President Of Iran A 'Hater'

During her stop in Estherville, Iowa, Bachmann responded to Ron Paul's accusation on the Jay Leno show last night that she "hates Muslims."

"I don't hate Muslims," Bachman said. "I love the American people. And as president of United States, my goal would be to keep the American people safe, free and sovereign."

"The haters are the president of Iran," she said. "He stated unequivocally that given a nuclear weapons he will use that weapon to wipe Israel off the map, and he's willing to use it against the United States of America."

(AP) ? Republican Jon Huntsman's presidential fortunes may have little to do with his party's conservatives.

If there is a path to success for the former Utah governor in the nomination race, it is likely lined with independents, a key voting bloc in New Hampshire and other early voting states that allow unaffiliated voters to help select the next Republican nominee.

The former Utah governor has bet big on New Hampshire, where he's devoted virtually all his time and energy in recent months. And polling suggests he may be on the rise, thanks largely to tens of thousands of independents likely to vote in New Hampshire's Jan. 10 Republican primary.

"I'm no longer the margin of error candidate, so we've got to start describing ourselves in different terms," Huntsman told The Associated Press last week after a Suffolk University survey put him in third place with 13 percent among likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters. "Maybe the surging candidate is more appropriate."

While the extent of any momentum is difficult to ascertain from one survey, pollsters note that Huntsman fares better than most of his rivals with independents, who represent about 40 percent of the New Hampshire electorate. Each state has its own rules, but unaffiliated voters are welcome to participate in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary and the subsequent South Carolina contest.

Huntsman's counting on those voters. And he's begun to use his independent appeal as a selling point on the campaign trail, suggesting that electability ? not necessarily ideological purity ? should be the prime consideration for GOP primary voters.

"I know that full well that in order to beat Barack Obama, we've got to make sure that the arithmetic is in our favor," Huntsman said. "And that means that we're going to need some independents who support us as well."

Despite high expectations earlier in the year, he has consistently struggled to attract the more conservative voters who typically dominate Republican primaries. A former ambassador to China in the Obama administration, Huntsman has taken more moderate positions on global warming, the war in Afghanistan, and gay rights, among other issues that don't play well with many conservatives.

The Suffolk survey found that Huntsman's standing among likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters, at 13 percent, is at an all-time high, however. And he scored second best among independents ? trailing only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Texas Rep. Ron Paul has also consistently performed well among independents, particularly those with libertarian leanings.

"If independents participate in a big way next January, Huntsman will benefit," said David Paleologos, director of Suffolk University's Political Research Center. "While other candidates have focused on the more traditional Republican voters, Huntsman has traction among independents, who could dominate the Republican primary if mobilized."

Some New Hampshire political observers suggest that Paleologos' analysis is overly optimistic.

And a strategy that relies upon independents is risky at best, especially as Huntsman struggles with campaign trail consistency and the limitations of a poorly-funded campaign with little infrastructure in other early voting states.

"Huntsman continues to mix his messages badly so that voters don't know what to believe," said Michael Dennehy, an unaligned New Hampshire-based Republican operative who led Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign four years ago. "Huntsman is now on a crusade saying that he is the most conservative candidate on abortion and gun rights, when just last month he was describing himself as a moderate and reaching out to independents. Voters won't support someone who has an inconsistent message."

And assuming he can win them over, it's unclear whether independents ? who are free to vote in the Republican or Democratic primaries ? will play a significant factor, according to University of New Hampshire pollster Andy Smith.

"They typically don't have that big of an impact," he said. "You can't win the primary by winning the independents; you've got to win among your registered voters."

Smith said that independents traditionally make their picks late in the game and tend to support the candidates whom they know best.

That could spell trouble for Huntsman, who is hardly well-known in New Hampshire, despite having hosted 120 public events here since joining the race. He often jokes that he's begun to develop a local accent.

But Huntsman has struggled to raise the money needed to reach a broader audience on television.

He got some help in recent weeks, however, after an independent super PAC designed to help Huntsman spent $1.2 million on two weeks of television commercials across New Hampshire.

"I think it's a combination of whatever might be on the air ? I don't have any control over that ? and a whole lot of what's happening on the ground," Huntsman said to explain his modest rise. "I don't think anyone is working nearly as hard as we are."

New Hampshire voters are beginning to notice.

"I'm not really leaning toward anyone though Huntsman does interest me," said 69-year-old Sonia Ascher, of Hollis, at recent town hall-style meeting Huntsman hosted at Rivier College. "I usually do not make my decision until very close to Election Day."

Huntsman will have a unique opportunity to sell his message in New Hampshire over the coming weeks as the rest of the field focuses on Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses. Huntsman has decided not to compete there.

"His greatest opportunity might just come to him by default," said unaffiliated New Hampshire Republican operative Rich Killion, adding that a "multi-candidate food fight seems to be evolving in Iowa." Huntsman "could potentially gain ground very late by simply just being available and existing as an alternative to the dynamic that could exist between Romney and Gingrich."

Huntsman says his success will have little to do with luck. He has a clear path to victory in his mind:

"I believe that when you come out of New Hampshire with a head of steam as we will do, then it becomes more of a question of electability for Republican voters and independent voters," he said. "And by doing what we're going to do in New Hampshire we will prove that point, that we are the most electable candidate to go up against Barack Obama and ultimately beat him."

MetLife sees 2012 growth, going back to Fed soon (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? MetLife expects operating earnings to rise as much as 7 percent in 2012, the largest life insurer in the United States said on Monday, though its forecasts for the fourth quarter and full-year 2011 were below expectations.

The company, whose shares rose 3.7 percent in premarket trading, also expects to go back to regulators next month with a revised plan to return capital to shareholders, after its last one was blocked.

MetLife is in the middle of a transformation following its acquisition of Alico in 2010. The company now derives a substantially larger share of its business outside the United States, and much of its growth will come from there as well.

The insurer recently reorganized its business units to acknowledge that shift, and it has started spending more aggressively on international branding.

MetLife (MET.N) said it expects 2011 operating earnings of $5.2 billion to $5.3 billion, or $4.83 to $4.93 per share; and 2012 operating earnings of $5.1 billion to $5.6 billion, or $4.80 to $5.20 per share.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S on average expected operating earnings of $4.95 per share in 2011 and $5.10 per share in 2012.

"Our outlook for 2012 assumes continued softness in the global economic environment," MetLife Chief Executive Steve Kandarian said on a conference call with investors and analysts. The 2012 plans also assumes no share buybacks, which would raise earnings per share.

Kandarian reiterated MetLife's belief that it can increase earnings on a yearly basis even in a persistently low interest rate environment, and said he was "frustrated" with the performance of the company's stock.

MetLife shares are down 28.5 percent this year, against a 14 percent decline for closest competitor Prudential Financial (PRU.N) and a 9.9 percent decline for the S&P insurance index (.GSPINSC).

GOING BACK TO THE FED

Because MetLife is a bank holding company, the Federal Reserve has the power to block the company's capital plans, which it did in late October.

Kandarian said MetLife will go back to the Fed with a new plan in January and hoped to have a response by the end of the first quarter. The company is also continuing plans to sell its banking business and shed its holding company status.

MetLife expects to have $6 billion to $7 billion in capital in 2012 for dividends and other actions. Analysts have said they expect MetLife to raise its dividend substantially and buy back at least $1 billion in stock.

For the current quarter, the company predicted earnings of $1.16 to $1.26 per share, below the analysts' consensus of $1.28 per share.

Outgoing Chief Financial Officer Bill Wheeler said the company's earnings would have been 6 cents per share higher but for integration costs and reserve charges.

Uptick in citizen journalism leads Syria to ban iPhones (Yahoo! News)

RQ-170 (File Photo, via Aviation Weekly)

A day after the Pentagon acknowledged that an unmanned American reconnaissance drone went missing while on an operation in western Afghanistan late last week, Defense officials still smarting from the incident have come forward to dismiss Iranian claims that the drone was brought down by hostile activity. And American cyber experts similarly expressed skepticism over Iranian contentions that hackers based in Iran brought down the drone by penetrating its software or jamming its signals.

"The one thing I can tell you is we don't have any indications that the UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle], that we know we no longer have, was brought down by hostile activity of any kind," Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing Monday otherwise short of many further details on the embarrassing incident, ABC News's Luis Martinez reported. "As it says in the statement, the controllers lost control and, without getting into specific details, I think we're comfortable stating that there's no indication of hostile activity."

Likewise, the reported contention made by some Iranian military officials that an Iranian cyber-warfare unit commandeered the drone strains credulity, cyber-security expert James Lewis said.

"Iran hacking into the drone is as likely as an Ayatollah standing on a mountain-top and using thought waves to bring it down," Lewis, a former Reagan administration official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Yahoo News by email Monday. "The most likely explanation is that it crashed on its own."

"If you could hack into a drone, you wouldn't use it for some spontaneous fun, you'd save it for a rainy day," Lewis continued. "You'd need to be able to hack either the control network in the U.S. or a satellite.? Neither is easy, and both are probably not something the Iranians can do."Read More ?

Russians vote in election test for Vladimir Putin (Reuters)

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (Reuters) ? Vladimir Putin's ruling party could see its vast parliamentary majority cut back in elections that began Sunday in the icy tundra and sparsely-populated swathes of Russia's far east.

At polling stations from the Arctic to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the election will indicate the scope of fatigue with Putin's 12-year rule just three months before he asks voters to endorse his return to the Kremlin as president.

Russians interviewed by Reuters across the world's biggest country gave a mixed picture. Some expressed disgust with a parliamentary election they said was likely to be rigged while others said they supported Putin and his United Russia party.

"I support United Russia. I like Putin. He is the strong leader we need in our country," said Nikolai, a 33-year-old customs officer in Vladivostok, a port city of 600,000 people on the Pacific and the biggest city in Russia's Far East.

Some voters said they would vote for Just Russia or the Communists because they were disillusioned with Putin and his party, a trend that could cost United Russia dearly.

Polls show Putin's party is likely to win a majority but less than the 315 seats it currently has in the 450-seat lower house of parliament, known as the Duma.

If it gets less than two-thirds of seats, Putin's party would be stripped of its so called constitutional majority which allows it to change the constitution and even approve the impeachment of the president.

Opposition parties say the election is unfair because the authorities support United Russia with cash and television air time while they say vote rigging will be employed to boost United Russia's result.

Supporters say the former-KGB spy saved Russia during his 2000-08 presidency from the chaos of the immediate post-Soviet era and supplied the longest and steepest economic boom in a generation. He also crushed a rebellion in the southern region of Chechnya that tested the fabric of a federation spanning 9,000 Km (5,600 miles) from the Baltic to the Pacific.

Russian customs officers held the director of an independent election watchdog for 12 hours at a Moscow airport Saturday. The United States said it was concerned by "a pattern of harassment" against the watchdog.

PUTIN'S PARTY

Putin remains by far Russia's most popular politician and the 59-year old leader is the ultimate arbiter between the clans which control the world's biggest energy producer.

But his party has had to fight against opponents who have branded it as a collection "swindlers and thieves" and a growing sense of unease among voters at Putin's grip on power.

"I shall not vote. I shall cross out all the parties on the list and write: 'Down with the party of swindlers and thieves,'" said Nikolai Markovtsev, an independent deputy in the Vladivostok city legislature.

"These are not elections: this is sacrilege," he said, adding that the biggest liberal opposition bloc had been barred from the vote by the authorities.

Opponents say Putin has crafted a brittle political system which excludes independent voices and that Russians are growing tired of Putin's cultivated tough man image.

An outburst of boos and whistling at Putin by fans at a Moscow martial arts fight and a sharp fall in opinion poll ratings during the election campaign had raised concerns Putin may be losing his legendary political touch.

FAR EAST

Putin is almost certain to win the March 4 presidential election but signs of disenchantment are extremely worrying for the Kremlin's political managers. Putin's self-portrayal as the anchor of Russian stability hinges on his popularity.

In an attempt to reinvigorate his party, which President Dmitry Medvedev is leading into the election as part of a job swap announced in September, Putin has sent his closest allies to lead United Russia in some of Russia's 83 regions.

Conquered by the Eastern Slavs under the tsars in the 18th and 19th centuries, Russia's far east covers an area almost twice the size of India but has just 6.3 million inhabitants.

Russians in the region braved temperatures as low as minus 41 degrees Celsius (minus 42 Fahrenheit) to vote eight hours before polls opened in Moscow.

Chukchi reindeer herders living across the Bering Sea from Alaska began voting in late November as did some oil workers on rigs pumping the lifeblood of Russia's $1.9 trillion economy.

Putin sent First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov to his native Far East to lead the ruling party's campaign in an area where one local journalist angered Medvedev during the campaign by appearing to imply the Far East was not even part of Russia. ($1 = 30.8947 Russian roubles)

A&M fires Sherman after disappointing season

BC-FBC--Texas A&M-Sherman Fired,808Texas A&M fires football coach Mike ShermanAP Photo NY173, TXDP103With AP Photos.By KRISTIE RIEKENAP Sports Writer

Texas A&M was supposed to return to national prominence this season.

Instead the Aggies finished the regular season with a disappointing 6-6 record that cost Mike Sherman his job.

Athletic director Bill Byrne announced Sherman's firing in a statement Thursday night.

The Aggies, who are leaving the Big 12 for the SEC next season, must now find a replacement to lead the team into their highly competitive new league.

The school hasn't named any candidates, but possible replacements could include Houston coach Kevin Sumlin or Louisville coach Charlie Strong. Sumlin, who has led the seventh-ranked Cougars to a 12-0 record, was an assistant at A&M from 2001-02. Strong also spent time with the Aggies, working as a graduate assistant in 1985.

Sherman, 25-25 in four seasons at A&M, had three years remaining on his contract and the buyout will be about $5.8 million. He was given a one-year extension to his original contract in July, but it was never executed.

He was hired at the end of the 2007 season three days after Dennis Franchione resigned.

His best and only winning season came last year, when the Aggies won their last six regular-season games and lost in the Cotton Bowl to finish 9-4.

"I appreciate Coach Sherman's selfless service to Texas A&M as our head football coach and his tireless efforts in building leaders of character," Byrne said in the statement. "He is truly one of the great offensive minds in football, both collegiate and professional, and I know that he has much to offer the game of football in the future."

Byrne said he will talk with the assistant coaches to decide who will serve as the interim coach for Texas A&M's bowl game. He also hopes to meet with the team and remaining staff Friday.

Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin thanked Sherman for his contributions to the program and said he created a "solid foundation for Texas A&M to build upon in the future."

"Decisions of this nature are never easy, and I appreciate the patience of Aggies everywhere as we carefully evaluated the current state of our football program and the prospects for the future," Loftin said.

The Aggies entered this season with 18 returning starters, a top-10 ranking and were expected to contend for the Big 12 championship and be a factor in the national title hunt.

Instead they lost early games to Oklahoma State and Arkansas after holding double-digit halftime leads to fall to 2-2.

They won three in a row after their first skid, but a three-game losing streak, which included two overtime losses, ensured the Aggies of a mediocre season. The low point of the season came when Texas A&M ended its more than century-old rivalry with Texas with a 27-25 loss at home on Thanksgiving.

At times, Sherman seemed to be grasping for ways to deal the team's narrow losses. Four of their six defeats were by a combined 10 points, including a 53-50 four-overtime loss to Kansas State.

"I've never experienced a season like this and I don't plan on experiencing a season like it again," Sherman said after the loss to Texas. "This was a very difficult season to swallow. We have good kids, they work hard, but for whatever reason the ball bounced funny for us sometimes, and we didn't make the play when we need to make it to win the games we didn't."

Current and former players expressed their thanks and support for Sherman via Twitter as they learned the news on Thursday night.

"It's unfortunate to see Coach Sherm go. He is like another father to me. He helped me become the person I am today. I will never forget, never," tweeted Von Miller, the former A&M pass-rusher taken second overall in the year's draft by the Denver Broncos.

Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill was disappointed to see Sherman leave.

"I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for such a great coach and great man as Mike Sherman," he said. "He helped us become not only better football players, but better men. ... He will be missed."

Sherman came to Texas A&M after spending two seasons a Houston Texans assistant coach. A&M was his first college job since he worked as an assistant with the Aggies from 1995-96.

After leaving A&M he was an assistant for Green Bay and Seattle before becoming the Packers' coach in 2000. Green Bay went 59-43 under Sherman and won three NFC North titles in six seasons, but he was fired after the Packers finished 4-12 in 2005.

The change gives the Aggies a chance for a fresh start when they move into the SEC next season. They end their time in the Big 12 after a decade filled mostly with disappointing finishes. The team had more than seven wins just twice since 2002.

Blackstone, Bain plan Yahoo bid: source (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Blackstone Group and Bain Capital are preparing a bid for all of Yahoo Inc with Asian partners in a deal that could value the Internet company at about $25 billion, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The potential bid by the consortium, which would include China's Alibaba Group and Japan's Softbank Corp, has not yet been finalized, the source and two other people familiar with the matter said.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, whose primary interest is in buying back a 40 percent stake owned by Yahoo, is keeping its options open and said it has not decided whether to participate in a bid for all of Yahoo.

"Alibaba Group has not made a decision to be part of a whole company bid for Yahoo," Alibaba Group spokesman, John Spelich, said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.

Yahoo's shares, which closed at $15.71 on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday, gained 6.4 percent to $16.72 in after-hours trading, valuing the company at more than $20 billion.

"Alibaba definitely wants to get its stake back from Yahoo, so whatever that can make that happen, they will try for it," said Hong Kong-based JPMorgan analyst, Dick Wei, adding Alibaba may finance the deal by taking on more debt or finding a strategic buyer.

Alibaba, run by its founder and billionaire CEO Jack Ma, has ties with some of the world's most prominent private equity funds and a group of investors including Silver Lake purchased a 5 percent stake worth $1.6 billion in early November.

A bid for Yahoo at more than $20 per share would mean a deal value of about $25 billion based on 1.24 billion shares outstanding, potentially making it the largest leveraged buyout in recent years.

Blackstone, Bain and Softbank declined to comment, while Yahoo representatives were not immediately available to comment.

HEAT ON THE BOARD

Although a bid for all of Yahoo is not yet on the table, the latest twist turns up the heat on Yahoo's board, which has received at least two offers for a minority stake in the company according to people familiar with the matter. One offer came from a consortium of Silver Lake and Microsoft Corp, and another from TPG Capital. Silver Lake, Microsoft and TPG have declined to comment.

Meanwhile, private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners is interested in buying the U.S. operations of Yahoo, people familiar with the matter told Reuters previously. Providence Equity Partners and Hellman & Friedman are also interested in a potential Yahoo deal. Thomas H. Lee, Providence and Hellman & Friedman have declined to comment on the situation.

Bain and Blackstone have a track record of teaming up for joint investments. In 2008, the two buyout firms, in partnership with NBC Universal, bought the Weather Channel.

In 2006, the private equity firms teamed up for a $6 billion buyout of Michaels Stores Inc, the biggest U.S. arts and crafts retailer.

Internet pioneer Yahoo has seen its growth stagnate in recent years due to competition from Google Inc and Facebook and is currently without a permanent CEO as it tries to regain relevance.

Yahoo's board fired CEO Carol Bartz in September and started a strategic review, which has been complicated by the different agendas of players with a say in the situation, including its Asian partners, co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo, the board and shareholders.

Yang has been exploring a deal with private equity firms to take the company private, according to sources, in part because that would represent his best chance of remaining involved with the company.

Mass immunization with cervical cancer vaccine switched to a more effective variety

By Dr Ananya Mandal, MD

Cervarix, a vaccine that protects cervical cancer, will be replaced by Gardasil which also prevents up to 90 per cent of genital warts.

Campaigners have argued that the wrong vaccine Cervarix is being used in the routine immunization programme for young girls, which is estimated to prevent 400 deaths a year. Cervarix is cheaper than rival Gardasil, but fails to protect against genital warts. Surveys suggested doctors were choosing Gardasil for private vaccination of their own daughters.

Cervarix is currently offered to girls aged 12 and 13 years to protect against strains of the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes most cases of cancer of the cervix, the neck of the womb. Cervarix was picked by the Labour government for the first four-year phase of the NHS programme in 2008 because it offered ?best overall value? and more than five million doses have been given.

The vaccine, made by GlaxoSmithKline, beat off its rival Gardasil, made by Sanofi Pasteur MSD, for the lucrative contract worth at least ?100 million, while a two-year catch-up programme for older girls was expected to cost a further ?20 million. Both vaccines are 70 per cent effective against HPV strains 16 and 18, but Gardasil also protects against two other strains responsible for 90 per cent of genital warts.

With 100,000 new cases of genital warts in England each year and condoms only reducing transmission by up to 50 per cent, doctors argue that the safer option is to vaccinate with Gardasil. Data from the Health Protection Agency says genital warts cost the NHS ?17 million a year, some of which could be saved by vaccinating against them. Doctors at the British Association for Sexual Health, which has campaigned for Gardasil, said it expected genital warts to be eradicated within 20 years among heterosexual boys and girls, as long as over 70 per cent of 12 to 13 year-old girls continue to have the full course.

The Department of Health (DH) last night confirmed that Gardasil had been chosen for the next four-year programme starting in September 2012 covering the whole country. The cost of the contract was ?commercially confidential? but updated information about the clinical benefits and pricing had been taken into account.

Professor David Salisbury, DH director of immunization, denied the original choice of vaccine had been wrong, saying it was a clear decision based on criteria at the time ? which had now changed. Latest Department of Health figures show at least three-quarters of girls aged between 12 and 15 have received all three doses. Professor Salisbury said, ?From next September, Gardasil will be the vaccine that we offer to girls to protect them against the HPV infection. It?s not unusual for the NHS to change vaccines or other medicines ? it can happen following competitive tendering exercises or when new research findings come to light.?

?Young women and girls who have already been vaccinated or who are due to be vaccinated before September, do not need to be vaccinated again. They have done exactly the right thing and they can be assured that they are protected against types of HPV virus that cause over 70 per cent of cervical cancer,? he added.

Peter Greenhouse, spokesperson for the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV, said, ?All of us at BASHH are delighted by the news that the next generation of teenage girls will receive a multi-purpose HPV vaccine which will protect them against cervical cancer AND genital warts. The UK-wide school cervical cancer vaccination campaign has produced higher rates of coverage than achieved in any other country - if we can keep this up we should expect to see genital wart infections start to reduce in teenage girls within five years, and slightly later in boys.?
